Cowboys Admit Joe Milton III Move Is Backfiring Fast

The Dallas Cowboys' recent addition of Sam Howell casts uncertainty over Joe Milton III, raising questions about their quarterback strategy amid free agency shifts.

Dallas Cowboys' Quarterback Quandary: Joe Milton III's Uncertain Future

When the Dallas Cowboys traded for quarterback Joe Milton III, the move was scrutinized as intensely as any decision made by America's Team. Milton, who was backing up Drake Maye with the New England Patriots, caught the Cowboys' attention. They sent a 2025 fifth-round pick to snag Milton and a 2025 seventh-round pick last March.

Fast forward a year, and the Cowboys seem to be reconsidering that decision. They signed Sam Howell on March 10 to compete for the backup spot behind Dak Prescott. This addition doesn't necessarily push Milton out, but it certainly raises questions about his future in Dallas.

Milton's Rollercoaster Year with the Cowboys

Milton came to Dallas with the allure of a mystery waiting to be unraveled. Known for his powerful arm, many expected him to be drafted higher in 2024 before the Patriots picked him in the sixth round.

He spent the season as a backup to Maye and Jacoby Brissett, only stepping into the spotlight in Week 18. Against the Buffalo Bills' backups, Milton shone, completing 22-of-29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, a performance that turned heads.

However, Milton's desire to start led to his trade to the Cowboys, part of New England's effort to "establish team culture," as ESPN's Mike Reiss noted. Despite some concerns about his character, the Cowboys took a chance on him.

Milton's preseason performance was mixed. Pro Football Focus reported he completed 36-of-65 passes for 397 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. His tendency for risky plays resulted in more turnover-worthy moments (4) than standout throws (3), with an average depth of target at 12.7 yards.

Playing a high-risk style didn't help Milton's case. He saw limited action during the regular season, completing 15-of-24 passes for 183 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

The Arrival of Sam Howell

The signing of Howell isn't shocking, given Milton's inconsistency. Howell, too, has struggled with turnovers, throwing 21 interceptions in 2023 before being traded by the Minnesota Vikings without playing a regular-season game.

Milton still believes he can succeed in the NFL, but the Cowboys' decision to bring Howell into the fold suggests they may not share that confidence. As the competition heats up, Milton's future with the Cowboys remains uncertain, leaving fans and analysts alike to wonder what the next chapter holds for this talented but unproven quarterback.
