The Dallas Cowboys have added another piece to their offensive line, striking a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers for former first-round tackle Broderick Jones as teams across the league trim rosters to 53.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Dallas is bringing in Jones, who was on track to hit free agency next offseason after Pittsburgh declined his fifth-year option this spring. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the full terms of the deal: the Cowboys receive Jones and a 2027 fourth-round pick, while the Steelers get a 2027 third-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick.
Jones leaves Pittsburgh after three seasons in which he played in 45 games and made 38 starts. He logged 2,472 snaps on offense and another 149 on special teams, and now heads to Dallas for a fresh start.
The move comes with the Cowboys still sorting out concerns along the offensive line, especially at tackle. Nate Thomas has struggled, and fourth-round rookie Drew Shelton has also drawn early doubts.
Dallas’ starting five, though, remains a strength. From left to right, Tyler Guyton, Tyler Smith, Cooper Beebe and Tyler Booker give the Cowboys a strong core, even if questions remain for some fans about Terence Steele at right tackle.
Jones also arrives with a built-in connection. He spent two seasons as a teammate of Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens at Georgia and two more with him in Pittsburgh. Their reunion in Dallas now stretches their time together to a fifth season as teammates at the college and NFL levels.
That Georgia bond includes a College Football Playoff National Championship in 2021, and Cowboys fans will be hoping the partnership can spark something similar in Dallas.
Jones’ role could become even more important if Steele doesn’t hold up at right tackle. He started the 2024 season as Pittsburgh’s right tackle and began 16 of the team’s 17 games that year. In 2025, he moved back to right tackle, drew early criticism, and then a neck injury in Week 12 ended his season.
Now he gets a chance to reset in Dallas.
It will also be interesting to see what new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy has to say about dealing with his former team ahead of the 2026 season.
