The Commanders just handed Stefon Diggs the kind of homecoming Trevon Diggs would probably love to steal for himself.
After months of sitting in free agency, the four-time Pro Bowler is officially headed to Washington, and the fit is hard to miss. The veteran receiver has spent the offseason saying he wants to return home, and now he gets that chance with a team that badly needs help behind Terry McLaurin. Washington chose Diggs over the NFL landmine that is Brandon Aiyuk, betting the 32-year-old can shore up the receiver room.
That decision creates an obvious layer of intrigue for Trevon Diggs, who has been released by the Dallas Cowboys and has also been trying to find his own way back home. The brothers were born and raised in the DMV, attended high school in Maryland, and Stefon played for the Terps in college. Now Stefon gets the full-circle move Trevon has been connected to, even if only in theory.
There was briefly some buzz earlier this offseason about Trevon possibly landing in Washington, but that never went anywhere. Still, the connection is easy to see now: his brother is there, Dan Quinn is there, and Quinn was the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator during the years Trevon was playing some of his best football.
For Washington, though, the move comes with no obvious push to add Trevon right away. The 27-year-old corner has dealt with knee injuries in recent seasons and hasn’t looked like the same player he was a half-decade ago. Since 2022, he has played in 10 games only once, and his coverage last season didn’t exactly force the Commanders’ hand.
So while Stefon Diggs gets the opportunity, the one Trevon might really want remains out of reach for now.
