The Kansas City Chiefs have been busy reshaping their cornerback lineup this offseason, and the latest addition is Kaiir Elam. Announced on Thursday, Elam's signing offers him a fresh start and a chance to reignite his career.
Originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills as the 23rd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Elam came out of Florida with high expectations. However, his journey in Buffalo didn't pan out as planned.
He found himself overshadowed by Christian Benford, a later-round pick, and struggled to secure a consistent starting role. Despite showing flashes of potential with two interceptions during his rookie season, Elam's performance metrics didn't quite hit the mark.
Before the 2025 season, Elam was traded to the Dallas Cowboys, where he appeared in 10 games and started seven. During his stint in Dallas, he recorded 29 tackles and defended just one pass. He finished the season with a brief period at the Tennessee Titans, playing in four games.
Standing at 6-foot-1, Elam is still relatively young, turning 25 on May 5. This gives him an opportunity to leverage his experience across four NFL seasons and develop further under the guidance of Chiefs' defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. The Chiefs are looking to bolster their cornerback depth, and Elam's untapped potential could be a key factor.
For Kansas City, aiming for a strong comeback season, unlocking Elam's abilities could be a crucial step towards quickly reestablishing themselves as contenders.
