Mike McCarthy's coaching journey has taken him to Pittsburgh, but his impact on CeeDee Lamb's career remains undeniable. Known affectionately as "Big Mike," McCarthy played a pivotal role in shaping Lamb into one of the NFL's premier receivers.
Lamb's NFL experience has been guided by two key figures: Mike McCarthy and Brian Schottenheimer. Under McCarthy's leadership, Lamb was drafted and nurtured, eventually rising to All-Pro status. During McCarthy's tenure, the Cowboys enjoyed three consecutive 12-5 seasons, with Lamb being a significant contributor.
However, in 2024, the Cowboys experienced a shake-up, leading to McCarthy's departure and Schottenheimer stepping in as head coach. McCarthy soon found a new home with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In a recent appearance on the Ross Tucker podcast, Lamb shared insights into what Steelers fans can expect from their new head coach. "Oh my God, a great guy, that's my man, I love Mike," Lamb said with enthusiasm.
"He's my only coach that I've had besides Schotty. As soon as you walk in the building, you're going to feel his energy, you're going to feel like what he wants to do."
Lamb highlighted McCarthy's offensive philosophy, noting, "He wants to go vertical with the ball. I'm going to tell you that right now.
So, he's going to do everything. He's going to tailor his offense and get things situated."
Reflecting on his development under McCarthy, Lamb transitioned from a promising rookie to an All-Pro in 2023, amassing 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns from 135 receptions. Impressively, he surpassed 1,000 yards in four of his five seasons with McCarthy, narrowly missing the mark in his rookie year with 935 yards.
"Everything that he's done, it's been out of love," Lamb expressed. "That's another guy that I would run through a wall for. Mike did a great job of developing me my first five years in the league, and I knew what to prepare for going forward."
As McCarthy embarks on his new chapter with the Steelers, his legacy with players like Lamb underscores the lasting influence of a coach who knows how to bring out the best in his team.
