Dallas made plenty of changes in the secondary, and with Christian Parker stepping in as defensive coordinator, the idea of an immediate turnaround doesn’t feel far-fetched.
If that kind of reset takes hold, the Cowboys could put themselves in position to win the NFC East and even enter the Super Bowl conversation. Downs hasn’t played a regular-season NFL snap yet, but the early buzz around him has already grown loud - maybe too loud.
CBS Sports recently ranked the top 10 players at every defensive position, and Downs showed up at No. 9 among safeties. As the outlet put it: "Downs was the lone defensive rookie to make a top 10 and one of just two rookies (Jeremiyah Love was the other) to do so at any position. He'll immediately help Dallas' leaky secondary."
That’s a notable nod for a rookie, especially at a position as crowded with talent as safety. Still, the leap from promising newcomer to top-10 player before even taking an NFL snap feels like a stretch. Downs may very well develop into one of the league’s best defensive backs, but that kind of label brings a lot of weight with it.
What’s made the hype feel even bigger is how Dallas has been using him in camp. During Wednesday’s practice, as Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News noted, Downs lined up at EDGE, in the box, and as a deep safety over a three-play stretch. That kind of versatility is exactly why the Cowboys are excited about him.
There’s little doubt Downs should have a major role on defense in 2026, and he could end up moving all over the formation. The skill set is clearly there, and teams with elite defenses often have a player who can do a little bit of everything.
For now, though, the returns need to be kept in perspective. The praise is coming fast, and with it comes pressure on a 21-year-old who is still settling into the NFL and into adulthood.
Downs has done nothing yet in the league, and he knows it. He’ll have to earn every bit of what comes next.
For all the promise, the smartest move might be to let him grow at his own pace.
