In a touching tribute at the Olympics, Team USA honored the late Johnny Gaudreau, a beloved Columbus Blue Jackets star, by including him in their gold medal celebration after defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime. The team’s gesture was not only a nod to Gaudreau’s contributions to the sport but also a heartfelt moment for his family.
As the final buzzer sounded, Team USA players skated with Gaudreau’s jersey, capturing photos on the ice alongside his daughter and son. Watching from the stands, Meredith Gaudreau, Johnny’s widow, along with his parents, were moved by the tribute. Meredith described the moment as both classy and heartwarming, expressing deep gratitude towards the team.
Meredith shared her emotions in an interview, saying, “I was really proud of the whole team. They didn’t have to do that.
It seemed like the first thing they did after winning was to honor John by skating with his jersey. Then they invited our kids onto the ice for a photo, which meant so much to us.”
She continued, “I felt really proud of John because everything they did was out of respect and love for him.”
Johnny Gaudreau, an 11-year NHL veteran, was anticipated to be part of Team USA in Milan. Tragically, Johnny and his brother Matthew lost their lives in August 2024, struck by an alleged drunk driver while cycling in New Jersey.
This tribute serves as a powerful reminder of Gaudreau’s impact on the hockey community and the enduring respect and love he inspired among teammates and fans alike.
