The Toronto Maple Leafs kept their momentum rolling Tuesday night with a road win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, but the victory came with a bruise.
Jake McCabe did not make it through the game. The veteran defenseman left early after taking a stick up high late in the first period, with an apparent injury to his face. Toronto later ruled him out for the rest of the night during the second intermission.
McCabe is deep into his 14th NHL season and has been anchoring the Leafs’ top pairing beside offseason addition Darren Raddysh. Through 10 games, he still hasn’t registered a point, and he’s sitting at minus-1 while averaging 20:10 of ice time per night.
The 33-year-old Wisconsin native is in the second season of the five-year deal he signed with Toronto, a contract that carries a cap hit of $4.153 million per season. He originally arrived with the Leafs in 2022-23 as a trade deadline pickup from the Chicago Blackhawks.
Toronto is already dealing with another blue-line absence. Chris Tanev is out week-to-week with an upper-body injury, which has pushed Troy Stecher onto the second pair with Morgan Rielly. Rookie Marshall Rifai and veteran Oliver Ekman-Larsson are holding down the third pair.
The McCabe injury came during a strong stretch for Toronto, which followed up Monday night’s win over the San Jose Sharks with another two points in Columbus. The back-to-back victories have lifted the Leafs to 5-4-2 and turned their goal differential from negative to positive. They currently sit in the second wild card spot by points, though they would be outside the playoff field by points percentage.

Fantillis Blunt Marchenko Reaction Raises A Bigger Blue Jackets Concern
Adam Fantillis reaction to Kirill Marchenkos departure was blunt, but it also gave a window into the mood around a Blue Jackets team still trying to define its direction. Marchenko had asked out before being traded, and Fantilli acknowledged both his skill and competitiveness while making clear he believes Columbus is better served moving forward without a player who did not want to be there.
The more revealing part is what Fantillis comments hint at beyond one roster change. The Blue Jackets are already living with questions that reach well past Marchenko, from what comes next for Zach Werenski to the uncertainty surrounding the coaching situation, and that is the backdrop for any major move involving the roster. Fantillis remarks suggest the organization may be bracing for more uncomfortable decisions, even if the details of the next ones are still to come. [Read more 🡒]
Blue Jackets Fans Have One Big Reason To Watch Voronkov Now
Dmitri Voronkov has become a player worth watching in Columbus for reasons that go beyond his usual role on the ice. The Blue Jackets forward has been mentioned as a possible trade candidate for a while now, and the chatter around him has lingered since last season as the team navigates what could become a busy stretch around the NHL market.
Even with those rumors hanging over him, there has been no confirmed recent trade talk involving Voronkov, which makes the next few weeks worth monitoring from a Columbus perspective. His status could still say a lot about where the Blue Jackets see themselves heading, especially as other NHL players begin to surface as possible trade pieces or future free agents later in the season. Maple Leafs May Finally Pay A Steep Price For Blue-Line Help
The Blue Jackets have enough going on without the leagues trade chatter spilling onto their doorstep, but it is hard to ignore how much the broader market is shifting around them. Around the East, teams are already looking for fixes, with Toronto reportedly ready to pay a steep price for blue-line help while trying to keep Easton Cowan out of any deal, and Nashville weighing bigger roster changes to get out of its current spot in the standings.
For Columbus, the next stretch could be just as important for a different reason. There is already speculation that a coaching change could come within the next 20 games, and the organization also has a major decision ahead on Zach Werenskis future, with a contract extension discussion possible as soon as next summer. Those are the kinds of questions that can shape everything from the direction of the roster to how aggressively the Jackets move when the market starts to heat up. [Read more 🡒]
