Carson Soucy’s path to a Blue Jackets contract just got a lot steeper.
The veteran defenseman entered camp on a professional tryout after a down year by his standards, and he picked Columbus after spending the 2025-26 season with both New York teams. The interest from the Blue Jackets was part of what drew him in, along with the chance to help a team he sees moving in the right direction.
“They showed interest from July,” Soucy said. I’ve heard good things about the city and where the team is headed, getting stronger these last couple seasons and trying to make that playoff push. I want to come in, try to make a difference and get in the playoffs.”
But the timing of his tryout matters just as much as the fit. Under the new CBA rules, NHL veterans on PTOs can appear in only two preseason games, and teams have just four exhibition games total. That leaves less room for anyone fighting for a job to build momentum, and it makes every shift count.
Soucy knows exactly what that means for him.
“I gotta come in and make a good impression,” Soucy said. That’s what a PTO is.
Come in, compete, make a good first impression and go from there. These skates are obviously important.
I had a great summer. It was plenty long enough, so I hit the conditioning right away and got a lot of skates in.
These sessions are really important to get back into the physical side and get that hockey shape back.”
He also spent time looking back at his recent play and identifying where things slipped. Now he’s trying to show Columbus that those issues are behind him, with an emphasis on getting back to being effective at both ends of the ice.
“Definitely the physical side, closing plays in the neutral zone, hard in the D-zone,” Soucy said of what he can still bring. “Over the last couple years I’ve maybe gone too far into the defensive side.
Earlier, I was jumping into the play more. I’m trying to contribute on offense again and bring that back.”
Blue Jackets coach Rick Bowness isn’t blind to the challenge either. With preseason games suddenly at a premium, he said the league’s PTO players are facing an unfair squeeze.
“It’s hard on them,” Bowness said of PTO’s. “Maybe there’s a special provision we can put in there that if a guy’s on a PTO, you can give him more games than two. It’s in fairness to him.”
Bowness added that Columbus would prefer a longer look at Soucy than the schedule allows.
“We want to take a real good look at (Soucy.) Are we going to get a real good look at him in two games?
We’d rather three or four, honestly. I’m sure he would too.
I’d like to see that change a little bit. We brought them in for a reason and we want to have a good evaluation of them.
The more we see them in games, the better we have.”
He said the same problem extends beyond veterans on tryouts.
“Those guys deserve a better look,” Bowness said. “But they’re not going to get it.”
Soucy skated with Dante Fabbro in Group 1 of Blue Jackets Training Camp, and he’s competing with Jake Christiansen and Erik Gudbranson for a possible spot on the third defensive pair. With those players already under contract, Soucy has just two preseason games to prove he deserves one too.

The Blue Jackets finally have the kind of late-summer schedule their fans can circle on the calendar. Training camp opens Sept. 17, and the club has laid out a full run of practices through Sept. 24, giving Columbus a clear first look at how the roster will start to take shape before the regular season conversation really gets going. There will even be a couple of chances for fans to watch in person on Sept. 19, which should make the first stretch of camp feel a little more real.
Preseason follows quickly behind, beginning Sept. 21 against the Detroit Red Wings and rolling on through Sept. 26 with games against the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins. The camp roster is set at 55 players, divided into two practice groups, so there will be plenty of names to sort through as the Jackets start evaluating who can make the strongest early impression. The Blue Jackets are heading into camp with a little extra attention on Damon Severson, whose offseason shoulder surgery has kept him out of the early on-ice work. Columbus has already had to sort through a few moving parts on defense around the league this week, but Severson remains one of the more important names to track because of how central he is to the blue line picture when he is healthy.
For now, the expectation is that Severson will work his way back in time for the regular season, even if preseason games come too soon for him. That still leaves the Jackets with a temporary hole to manage and a watchful eye on how quickly he progresses once the exhibition schedule opens, especially with the team trying to get its defense settled before the games start to count.
