Blue Jackets Suddenly Have A Mathieu Olivier Problem They Can't Ignore

The Blue Jackets are calling on Mathieu Olivier to sharpen his judgment on the ice amidst growing concerns over his recent costly mistakes.

The Blue Jackets are asking Mathieu Olivier to do a lot for them this season - provide energy, stand up for teammates, and help drive one of their best lines. What they cannot afford is the kind of split-second judgment that has already put them in bad spots three times in five games.

That was the ugly thread running through last night’s loss to the Florida Panthers, when Olivier turned a bad situation into a worse one. Columbus was already down 3-1 after Florida had strung together three straight Brady Tkachuk goals, and the Jackets were looking for a spark. Instead, Olivier’s response crossed a line.

After a wall battle with Panthers defenseman Uvis Balinskis, Olivier lost his composure. Balinskis gave him a shove, then a shoulder check, and Olivier answered with what can only be described as a cup check - a slash to a very sensitive area. The officials hit him with a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for slashing Uvis Balinskis between the legs 😬

Balinskis did what players are trained to do in that situation. He went down, stayed down, and even headed to the tunnel.

He did not miss a shift, and Olivier should count himself fortunate that Balinskis returned. If he hadn’t, this could easily have turned into something more serious this morning.

As of now, nothing has been announced by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.

The bigger issue is that this wasn’t an isolated lapse. Olivier has already burned his team twice earlier this season.

On opening night against Buffalo, with Columbus up 3-2 and already heading to the penalty kill, he pushed the puck into the empty net in an effort to draw a reaction and get the Sabres to take a penalty. They did react.

Olivier got his fight, but he also picked up an unsportsmanlike penalty and put his team in a 5-on-3 situation. It worked out for Columbus in that game, but it was still a risky move.

Then on Saturday night, with the Jackets ahead 2-0 on the road, Olivier dropped the gloves with Ross Johnston to start the second period. The timing was the problem. Columbus lost control of the game from there, and the Blues took over.

Last night was different. Last night the cost was immediate, and it came in a game the Blue Jackets still had a chance to salvage. For a player wearing a letter, it was the kind of selfish moment that stands out.

That’s what makes this so frustrating for Columbus. Olivier is not just an enforcer.

He has become a crucial piece of the best line the team has. That group drives play against any competition, adds secondary scoring, and handles shutdown work.

Take #24 out of the mix, and that line loses a lot of its punch. The Jackets also lose one of their protectors, something they could have used against Florida.

The expectation is still clear: Olivier should fight when called on and bring energy when his team needs it. But he has to choose the right moments, and he has to avoid dangerous plays like the one he made last night. His decisions have already cost the Blue Jackets too much.

After the game, he apologized to the team. That’s the right response. Now he has to back it up the only way that matters - by getting back to work and doing the job this team needs from him shift by shift.

Rick Bowness Calls Out Blue Jackets Over Effort And Standards

Rick Bowness did not try to soften the blow after Columbus was routed by Florida, a 7-3 loss that left the Blue Jackets searching for answers yet again. The coach was plainly frustrated by the way his team played, hoping the performance serves as a jolt for a group that has now dropped three of its last four and continues to fight for consistency early in the season.

The Panthers took control behind Brady Tkachuks natural hat trick, but for Bowness the larger issue has been the same one he has raised before: effort, culture and the standard the Blue Jackets are supposed to meet every night. He has already spent parts of the 2025-26 season challenging his roster on those fronts, and after another uneven showing, the message is becoming impossible to miss. [Read more 🡒]

Blue Jackets Let A Strong Start Slip After A Costly Turning Point

Connor Garland was in the lineup despite being sick, and the early going had the feel of a game the Blue Jackets could still steer their way. They got production from KJ and Brady in the first two periods, while the overall pace and penalty volume kept special teams in the spotlight and made every shift feel a little heavier than usual.

Then the turning point arrived, and it swung the game hard. A slashing penalty on Mathieu Olivier led to a lengthy major and opened the door for the other side to seize control, with the momentum of the night shifting on special teams in a way Columbus could not answer. [Read more 🡒]

Damon Severson Is Giving The Blue Jackets A Boost They Needed

Damon Seversons return has come at an important time for the Blue Jackets, who have been looking for more stability on the back end after his shoulder surgery rehab kept him out. In just three games back, he has already settled in beside Zach Werenski on the top pairing and looked comfortable doing it, adding a goal and three assists while helping Columbus play with more confidence in its own zone.

The most encouraging sign came against Florida, where Severson was a steady presence throughout and gave the Jackets the kind of push they had been missing from their blue line. Columbus does not need him to carry everything, but if he keeps pairing with Werenski the way he has so far, the Blue Jackets suddenly have a defense combination that can change the tone of a game.
