The Columbus Blue Jackets are adding another veteran name to the crease, with Pierre LeBrun reporting that the team is set to sign Cam Talbot to a one-year deal worth a $950K AAV.
For Talbot, it’s another stop on a long NHL run - this will be his tenth professional contract with an NHL franchise. The 39-year-old most recently finished the 2025-26 season with the Detroit Red Wings, backing up John Gibson and appearing in 34 games.
He stopped 704 shots, gave up 93 goals, and finished with an .883 save percentage and a 3.19 goals-against average. His -13.11 goals saved above expected ranked 92nd among NHL goaltenders last season, and he went 12-9-6.
That rough finish came after a much stronger first season in Detroit. Talbot was in the second year of a two-year, $2.5MM contract with the Red Wings, and he quickly took the starting job away from Ville Husso and Alex Lyon in 2024-25. That year, he put together a 21-19-5 record in 47 games with a .900 SV% and a 2.93 GAA.
The move makes sense in Columbus given the situation in net. The Blue Jackets announced that Elvis Merzlikins underwent surgery to repair a shoulder injury after feeling discomfort during offseason workouts.
An MRI confirmed the need for surgery, and the team has not given a timetable for his return. The late-summer procedure could affect his availability for training camp, which opens September 16, or the regular-season opener on October 1.
Jet Greaves earned the starting role for Columbus last season and reinforced that position by signing a three-year, $15MM contract on July 23rd. That deal set Merzlikins up as the backup for 2026-27, but with the shoulder injury in play, Talbot should be right in the mix to compete for that job at camp.
He’ll be in the mix with Pheonix Copley, who is currently in the minors, as the Blue Jackets sort out their veteran backup situation. Columbus could also turn to prospect Sergei Ivanov if it wants to bring a top young goalie to the NHL right away.
Ivanov posted a .928 save percentage in 29 games with SKA St. Petersburg last season after spending the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons as a starter for other clubs.
The 22-year-old has clear upside, but his lack of North American experience could keep him headed to the Cleveland Monsters while Copley moves up.
