The Carolina Hurricanes don’t appear to have anything active in the works with Jalen Chatfield, and the latest word is that a split could be coming at season’s end.
According to The Fourth Period, Chatfield’s agent, Darren Ferris, spoke with GM Eric Tulsky in September, when both sides tried to see if a deal could be reached. It didn’t happen.
Since then, there hasn’t been any follow-up, and there aren’t talks scheduled now. As Pagnotta put it: “Darren and Tulsky spoke at the start of the season, they tried to get something done at that point,” Pagnotta said.
“They weren’t able to come to terms on an agreement. And as of now that’s where things are.
There have been no talks since; there are no talks planned, and we will see how that develops as the season goes. The inkling right now is that he is headed to free agency.”
Chatfield, 30, is playing out the final year of a deal that carries a $3.025 million cap hit. He also has a 15-team no-trade clause. He’s one of four Hurricanes defensemen pending unrestricted free agents, alongside Shayne Gostisbehere, Juuso Valimaki and Mike Reilly.
In Columbus, the Blue Jackets are drawing interest on Dmitri Voronkov. Pierre LeBrun reports that other teams have been checking in on the forward, and while a deal is far from certain, Columbus is at least taking calls and listening to what’s out there.
The Rangers, meanwhile, are still working the goaltending market. Peter Baugh and Vincent Z.
Mercogliano of The Athletic report that New York is talking to teams about both goalies with term and those without it, and the club is open to a goalie with term if that player is the best fit. The Rangers had been linked in speculation to Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Karel Vejmelka in connection with Connor Hellebuyck.
New York brought in 32-year-old Joonas Korpisalo this offseason, but he’s missed the entire year with a foot infection. He was initially expected to be out four weeks, and he still hasn’t resumed skating.
Dylan Garand’s play has bought the Rangers some breathing room, giving them the chance to wait and see how the situation develops. Later in the season, pending UFAs such as Jordan Binnington, Philipp Grubauer and Darcy Kuemper could become available.
That leaves New York with another choice to make: if Garand keeps performing and Korpisalo returns, the Rangers could simply stay with that tandem and use their resources elsewhere. The bigger question then becomes whether they’d rather commit assets to pending UFA forwards Ryan O’Reilly, Morgan Frost or Pavel Zacha, or target players with term such as Jake DeBrusk and Rickard Rakell.

Blue Jackets Fans Are Already Debating One Zach Werenski Concern
Zach Werenski is off to another familiar start for the Blue Jackets, and the early numbers suggest the offense around him is still there even if the conversation online has turned sideways. Through the first nine games, he has 2 goals and 4 assists, which fits pretty neatly with what he has usually done in the opening stretch of recent seasons, while Columbus has stumbled to a 4-5 record and left fans looking for someone to pin the uneven start on.
The concern is less about what Werenski is creating and more about what has been showing up on the other side of the puck. His giveaways and defensive-zone giveaways are tracking toward a career worst, and that has become the early warning sign for a player the Blue Jackets still rely on in every situation. For a team trying to steady itself, the debate is not whether Werenski can drive play, but whether the mistakes are becoming too costly too soon. [Read more 🡒]
Blue Jackets Prospect Evan Jardine Is Forcing His Way Onto The Radar
Evan Jardine is already making a noticeable first impression in his first college hockey season, and that matters in Columbus. The Blue Jackets fourth-round pick has stepped into Ohio State and quickly found a way to produce, carrying over the promise he showed with the Youngstown Phantoms into a faster, bigger stage.
The early returns have given the Blue Jackets something worth tracking closely. Jardine has been around the puck, around the net and around the scoring chances in a way that suggests his development is moving in the right direction, even if the bigger test will be sustaining it over a full college season. For a prospect group that is always looking for breakout signs, he is starting to look less like a long-term flier and more like a name that belongs on the radar. [Read more 🡒]
Blue Jackets Fans Mourning Heartbreaking Loss With Deep Ohio State Ties
Sean Romeos death has left a painful gap in a hockey community that stretches well beyond Columbus, especially for fans who followed his Ohio State career from 2016 to 2019. The former Buckeyes goalie was remembered not only for what he did on the ice, but also for the academic success that made him stand out during his collegiate years.
Friends, teammates and supporters are now reflecting on a life cut far too short, with Romeos family and loved ones facing the aftermath of a sudden medical emergency. There is comfort in knowing his final act was one of generosity, even as those close to him continue to process a loss that has hit the college hockey and Blue Jackets orbit so hard. [Read more 🡒]
