The Columbus Blue Jackets found themselves in a familiar yet frustrating spot Thursday night, dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to the Florida Panthers. This marks the third time in four games that Columbus has let an extra point slip away, but this one had a different sting to it.
The Panthers capitalized on a controversial power play in overtime, leaving the Blue Jackets feeling the heat in the Sunshine State. Columbus’ lone goal came courtesy of Adam Fantilli, who netted his 19th of the season in the second period. The young star has been on fire, scoring six goals in the nine games since returning from the Olympic break.
Florida responded quickly in the third period, with Sam Bennett leveling the score with a power-play goal. The game remained tied at 1-1 heading into overtime, where a pivotal moment unfolded.
Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk broke away, only to be caught by Fantilli in a dramatic chase. As Tkachuk fell awkwardly, officials called a tripping penalty on Fantilli, a decision that didn’t sit well with Columbus.
The call gave Florida a 4-on-3 advantage, and Sam Reinhart seized the opportunity, scoring the game-winner. Fantilli didn’t hold back post-game, expressing his disappointment over the call, noting Tkachuk’s penchant for embellishment.
Blue Jackets head coach Rick Bowness echoed the sentiment, stating, “I don’t think it was a penalty. Simple as that.
We have the benefit of looking at it. The referees do not.”
Despite the loss, Columbus extended their point streak to eight games, inching closer to a playoff spot as they trail the Boston Bruins by just a point for the final wild card position in the Eastern Conference.
In the first period, Columbus came out firing, dominating with 14 shots on goal compared to Florida’s three. The Blue Jackets controlled the pace, but the Panthers’ defense stood firm, blocking 10 shots to keep the game scoreless.
The second period saw Fantilli break the deadlock, thanks to a brilliant setup by Mason Marchment. Marchment disrupted a Florida 2-on-1, turning defense into offense and setting up Fantilli for a crucial goal.
The Panthers equalized early in the third, with Bennett capitalizing on a rebound from a Reinhart shot, showcasing the potency of Florida’s power play.
Overtime was all about Florida, as they outshot Columbus 5-0. Reinhart’s wrist shot sealed the win, making the most of the power play opportunity.
Looking at the stats, Columbus outshot Florida 31-21 and had a significant edge in faceoffs, winning 59% of the draws. However, their power play struggled, going 0-for-2, while Florida converted both of theirs.
The Blue Jackets continue their road trip with a Saturday night showdown against the Philadelphia Flyers, hoping to convert these single points into full victories as they push for the playoffs.
