Blue Jackets Make Another Depth Move As Bigger Questions Linger

The Columbus Blue Jackets bolster their roster with strategic one-year signings of seasoned goaltender Pheonix Copley and forward Riley Bezeau, hinting at further maneuvering in the offseason.

The Columbus Blue Jackets added a pair of depth pieces on one-year deals, bringing in goaltender Pheonix Copley and forward Riley Bezeau at $850,000 cap hits apiece.

Copley arrives as a familiar NHL hand with plenty of mileage behind him. The 34-year-old has appeared in 78 games across 10 seasons, and while most of that work has come in a backup role, his career line still includes a 44-17-8 record, three shutouts and a .898 save percentage.

His top NHL stretch came in 2022-23, when he went 24-6-3 with one shutout. Since then, his NHL chances have been limited, with only 10 starts over the last three seasons combined.

Most of Copley’s recent work has come in the AHL, where he posted a 21-11-1 record with the Ontario Reign last year. Over 11 AHL seasons, he has piled up a 169-104-40 record with 18 shutouts in 312 games. The expectation is that he’ll spend 2026-27 with the Cleveland Monsters, while Elvis Merzlikins and Jet Greaves remain in place with the NHL club.

Bezeau is coming off his fourth AHL season and brings a different kind of edge. In 24 games with the Monsters, the 24-year-old scored five goals and seven points, but the physical side of his game stood out just as much with 74 penalty minutes.

He added another goal and 39 PIM in the 2025-26 Calder Cup playoffs. Signed originally as an undrafted free agent, Bezeau has totaled 15 goals and 27 points with 244 penalty minutes in 131 AHL games over five years, and he has not yet reached the NHL.

He is likely to remain in the AHL for the upcoming season.

Columbus still has room to keep working this offseason, sitting on $23 million in current cap space. A move involving defenseman Zach Werenski would create even more flexibility, though nothing is currently close on that front.

Blue Jackets Just Locked In A Blue Line Decision Fans Will Debate

The Blue Jackets have settled at least one piece of their blue line puzzle, with GM Don Waddell confirming Erik Gudbranson will be back for the upcoming season. It rounds out what looks like the clubs returning defense corps, assuming the remaining restricted free agents are extended, and it keeps Columbus moving toward a group that now has only one open roster spot left to sort out.

Gudbransons return also brings a familiar debate with it, since the veteran is expected to handle a third-pairing role while the Jackets continue shaping the rest of the back end. Waddell said he has been working out in Columbus this offseason and is in great shape, but the bigger question for fans is how much the team can count on him after he missed 111 of 164 games over the last two seasons. Blue Jackets Crease Future Suddenly Includes A Goalie Fans Will Debate

The Blue Jackets added another name to their goaltending pipeline at last weekends NHL Draft, taking Parker Snell out of the WHLs Edmonton Oil Kings in the fifth round. For a club always looking to sort out the future in net, Snell is the kind of pick that invites a closer look: a young goalie who spent his rookie WHL season growing into a bigger role and, by the end of the year, had worked his way into the Oil Kings primary starter conversation.

At 6-foot-2, Snell brings an aggressive, athletic style that shows up in his lateral movement and reflexes, with enough highlight-reel ability to make him stand out on a draft board. The flip side is the part Columbus will keep monitoring, since his game still comes with angle and rebound concerns that need polish before anyone can project him much further. For the Blue Jackets, it is the familiar goalie prospect equation: enough upside to dream on, enough rough edges to keep the debate going. [Read more 🡒]

Blue Jackets Fans Finally Got Clarity On A Tense Core Situation

Kirill Marchenkos name had been floating in trade chatter long enough to make Columbus fans uneasy, but general manager Don Waddell finally put the speculation to rest by confirming the winger will stay with the Blue Jackets for the upcoming season. It is the kind of clarity the team needed around one of its most important young pieces, especially with Marchenko entering the final year of his deal before restricted free agency next summer.

Zach Werenski added to the sense of stability by saying he is happy to be back with Columbus after using his no-move clause to stay put. For a Blue Jackets team trying to settle its core and avoid more summer uncertainty, keeping both Marchenko and Werenski in the fold matters beyond just the roster sheet, even if the long-term picture still has another layer waiting down the road.
