The Blue Jackets are adding some insurance in net.
Veteran goalie Cam Talbot is expected to sign a one-year deal with Columbus later today, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun. LeBrun reported the contract is for $950,000.
“Hearing the Blue Jackets will be signing UFA veteran goalie Cam Talbot, 39, to a one-year deal ($950k) later today. Colleague @Aportzline speculated in his piece today that this might possibly happen.”
Talbot, 39, brings a long résumé with him. He has played 567 career NHL games across eight organizations, and Columbus will be counting on that experience as it sorts through a thin situation in goal. He is expected to head to camp and try to win the backup job over fellow UFA signee Pheonix Copley.
The Blue Jackets’ move also says plenty about where things stand with Elvis Merzlikins. Merzlikins was supposed to be one of the team’s two goaltenders this season, but he had shoulder surgery last month and still hasn’t returned to Columbus for his preseason physical.
That uncertainty is what makes the Talbot signing feel so important. It may also hint that Merzlikins could be dealing with a longer absence than originally hoped.
Talbot’s most recent season came with the Detroit Red Wings, where he appeared in 34 games and made 25 starts. He finished 12-9-6 with a .883 save percentage and a 3.19 goals-against average. Those numbers were down sharply from the season before, when he played 47 games, started 43, and posted a .901 save percentage, a 2.93 GAA, a 21-19-5 record and two shutouts.
Columbus is clearly hoping there’s still some of that better form left in him. Talbot’s career save percentage sits at .911, and the Blue Jackets are trying to stabilize a position that suddenly looks a lot less settled than it did a month ago.
The contract may also end up being more than a simple $950,000 deal. As an over-35 player, Talbot is eligible for a bonus-heavy contract, and if he ends up playing the whole season in Columbus, the total could rise.
For Talbot, the timing makes sense after spending the entire summer unsigned. If he can step in and handle 25 or 30 games, there’s a path to those bonuses. For the Blue Jackets, it means leaning even more on Jet Greaves for a larger share of the workload this season while they wait to see how Merzlikins’ recovery unfolds.
