Blue Jackets Have An Early Lineup Problem Luca Del Bel Belluz Could Solve

Could promoting newcomer Luca Del Bel Belluz be the key to igniting the Blue Jackets' struggling offense and solidifying their lineup?

Four games into the season, the Blue Jackets are still searching for the right mix, and the biggest question is whether the answer is already sitting in the press box.

Luca Del Bel Belluz is the only skater on the active roster who hasn’t taken a shift yet this season, which makes him the obvious name when the conversation turns to adding some balance to a lineup that has not lacked for goals but still hasn’t found enough consistency. If the Jackets are trying to smooth out the edges, he looks like the kind of player who might help.

The numbers say Columbus has scored 12 goals in four games, which works out to exactly three per night. That’s not a disaster by any means. In today’s NHL, though, it has mostly been enough to keep them hanging around .500.

The bigger concern is what’s happening the other way. The Jackets have given up 14 goals already, and for a team built to clog lanes and limit space, that is the part that stands out. It’s also the part that has to change.

The simplest way to keep pucks out of your net is to keep them away from the other team. That’s been true in Columbus’ wins, and it explains why the third line matters so much. More often than not, that group decides what kind of night the Blue Jackets are going to have.

That was on full display Friday against Pittsburgh, when they were assigned to shadow the Sidney Crosby line and did the job by living in the Penguins’ end. It’s hard for #87 to do what he does best when he’s stuck spending 40 seconds defending.

That kind of territorial advantage is exactly what the rest of the forward group has not delivered often enough. Three lines are supposed to play that same style - get the puck deep, battle for it, drive the net and collect the ugly goals. But outside of the top line and maybe Charlie Coyle, there hasn’t been much evidence of a forward group consistently threatening with the puck.

The Sean Monahan line is a fair place to start. For most of the season, it has featured Valeri Nichushkin and Dmitri Voronkov, two big forwards with real skill.

The issue is speed. The line has been slow, really slow, and that has left Nichushkin waiting for support more often than not.

Nichushkin has shown flashes of elite ability, but the fit hasn’t helped him. Monahan and Voronkov are not matching his pace, and the result has been a quiet start: the three of them have combined for just 5 points in 4 games.

That’s why Del Bel Belluz makes sense here. Move Voronkov off that line and give Del Bel Belluz a look with Monahan and Nichushkin. Voronkov could then slide either onto the “identity” line with Charlie Coyle and Mathieu Olivier or down to center the fourth line in place of Danton Heinen.

There’s an argument for Heinen being there, and he has been fine in his role. That role, though, is a tough one, and he has spent plenty of time in it.

Still, the production and impact aren’t so indispensable that Columbus couldn’t replace him tomorrow. The roster has enough defensively capable forwards to absorb that change.

Another option would be to put Voronkov with Conor Garland, which could give the fourth line more juice as well. However it’s arranged, the point is the same: the Jackets need a version of their lineup that can give them reliable minutes without getting pinned back shift after shift.

That’s depth. And right now, it looks like the Blue Jackets could use more of it.

Blue Jackets Just Sent A Small But Telling Message On Riley Bezeau

The Blue Jackets made a quiet roster move with Riley Bezeau, activating the forward from injured, non-roster status and sending him back to the Cleveland Monsters. It was the kind of transaction that can be easy to miss, but it did come with a notable wrinkle: Columbus also named him one of its alternate captains for the season.

For a player headed back to the AHL, thats a small but telling sign of how the organization views him. Bezeau may be on the move again in the standings sense, but the Blue Jackets clearly still want his presence in the mix, whether that means leadership in Cleveland now or a larger role later if circumstances open a door in Columbus. Denton Mateychuk Is Headed Toward A Blue Jackets Payday Debate

Denton Mateychuk is getting close to the point where his next Blue Jackets contract becomes more than a backdrop conversation. The young defenseman is entering the final season of his entry-level deal in Columbus, and his camp has already made clear it would be open to discussing an extension if the terms make sense.

For now, the situation is mostly about timing and value, two things that can move quickly once a team sees a player as part of its long-term core. Comparisons around the league suggest Mateychuk is the kind of defenseman whose next deal could land well above the usual bridge range, which is exactly why his next step is the sort of decision Columbus will want to get right before the market gets any louder. Blue Jackets Are Showing An Early Edge Fans Should Notice

A small early-season detail has jumped off the page for Columbus: the Blue Jackets are controlling the dot in a way that can change shifts before they really start. Through four games, they have been efficient in the faceoff circle, and the gains have shown up in key moments too, with strong numbers on both the power play and while shorthanded. For a team looking to build cleaner possession and more stable game flow, that kind of work can matter as much as a hot scoring stretch.

Adam Fantilli has been a big part of that edge, with Charlie Coyle also giving the Blue Jackets a reliable presence in the circle. The bigger question now is whether this is an early-season blip or a real habit that can hold up once opponents start game-planning more aggressively, because teams that consistently start with the puck tend to make life easier on themselves in just about every zone.
