Blue Jackets fans will have a chance to do some good while spending time at Nationwide Arena this month, as Columbus teams up with the American Red Cross for its annual September blood drive.
The drive is set for Thursday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Activity Center at Nationwide Arena. The Red Cross is encouraging appointments, which can be made at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS and using sponsor code CBJGivesBack.
There’s also a built-in bonus for donors. Anyone who gives blood in the region between Sept. 1 and Sept. 30 will get a special ticket offer to select Blue Jackets games and will be entered into weekly drawings for a Blue Jackets prize pack each week in September. Donors who give by Sept. 20 will also receive an exclusive American Red Cross and Hello Kitty plush mascot clip and sticker pack, while supplies last.
The effort is aimed at helping meet a daily need that never really lets up: more than 13,000 blood and platelet donations to support patients at about 2,500 hospitals across the country.
To be eligible, donors generally must be at least 17 years old in most states, or 16 with parental consent where allowed by law, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health. High school students and people 18 and younger must also meet certain height and weight requirements.
Those planning to donate can speed up the process by completing their pre-donation reading and health history questions online through RapidPass on the day of their visit. Face masks are required for donors and staff at all Red Cross blood drives, and appointments are encouraged to help maintain safety and infection control measures.
The Red Cross says it supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood and also provides disaster relief, humanitarian aid, shelter for disaster victims and support for military families.
