Blue Jackets Fans Should Watch This Penguins Trade Twist Closely

With the Penguins shifting focus towards younger talent, Rickard Rakell's future with the team looks increasingly uncertain amid trade discussions.

The Pittsburgh Penguins may be getting close to a Rickard Rakell decision, and the signal is hard to miss: his name keeps coming up as the kind of veteran the team could turn into younger pieces as it reshapes the roster.

Rakell’s fit with that direction is part of why he’s suddenly such a natural trade candidate. He’s 30-goal forward pedigree on a team that appears to be moving toward a younger group over the next year or two, and his season has started slowly for both him and the Penguins. That’s pushed his value into a tricky spot - still useful, but possibly not at its peak.

Chris Johnston of The Athletic put Rakell on his recent trade board and described why the conversation around him hasn’t gone away:

“No stranger to the Big Board in the past year or two, Rakell’s time may finally be winding down with a Penguins team slowly transitioning to a younger group. While he’s delivered an outsized amount of production on a reasonable contract, it’s been a slow start to the year for both player and team.

Still, Rakell is an above-average finisher who has a history of holding his own when playing alongside highly skilled linemates. He’s scored at a 29-goal-per-82-game pace across the last four seasons.”

Rakell is signed for this season and next at $5 million per year, and he also has an eight-team no-trade list. That gives him some say in where he lands, though not enough to make him untouchable if Pittsburgh decides the timing is right.

If the Penguins can find a team willing to pay for his track record, they could try to move him before the trade deadline for a solid return. But there’s also a case for patience.

GM Kyle Dubas would be wise to let Rakell play through the slump, because his trade value looks lower now than it would if the scoring picks back up. A couple of productive weeks could change the market fast for a player who has usually been a reliable finisher.

There was also some summer chatter around Rakell being included in a larger trade idea involving the Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets as part of a Kirill Marchenko deal. That never materialized, and the Blue Jackets instead landed Matthew Knies in a trade that sent Marchenko to Toronto.

The bigger question is whether Pittsburgh has already passed the best window to move him. The Penguins were said to be open to dealing Rakell last season, but the asking price was high. Now the team is left hoping that opportunity hasn’t slipped away before it can cash in on a player who still clearly has value.

Blue Jackets Reunion With Marchenko Turns Into Another Ugly Night

Kirill Marchenkos return to Nationwide Arena gave Columbus one more familiar face to track in a game that already had enough firepower to keep the building on edge. The Blue Jackets got goals from Jake Christiansen and Charlie Coyle, but Toronto matched them with a steady stream of offense, turning the night into another one of those games where every push seemed to invite an answer.

Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Easton Cowan and Jack Roslovic all found the net for the Maple Leafs, adding to a scoreboard that kept changing and kept the home side chasing. The late-stage frustration only grew as Toronto picked up another milestone moment in the process, leaving Columbus with little comfort beyond a few bright spots in a game that never settled down. Leafs Suddenly Have A Blue-Line Problem Blue Jackets Fans Will Notice

The Maple Leafs blue line took a hit during their game against Columbus when veteran defenseman Jake McCabe left with a facial injury in the first period. McCabe, who has been skating on Torontos top pairing, was ruled out for the rest of the night, adding to a defensive group that is already working around injuries and shuffling roles.

Toronto has been leaning on depth more than it would like, with Chris Tanev out on a week-to-week basis and Troy Stecher stepping into the second pairing. For Blue Jackets fans, it is the kind of early-season roster wrinkle worth watching because any more strain on Torontos defense could change how the Leafs manage matchups and minutes the next time these teams meet. Blue Jackets Power Play Problem Is Becoming Impossible To Ignore

Through the first stretch of the 2026-27 season, Columbus has not been able to lean on its special teams the way it hoped, and the power play has become the clearest issue hanging over the early schedule. The Blue Jackets have managed only one regulation win in their first eight games, and the last time they scored with the man advantage came in that opening night game against Buffalo.

Since then, the chances have piled up without the payoff, leaving a unit that is searching for answers and a staff looking back at what worked in that first game. The opening-night goals offered a useful snapshot of both the promise and the problems, showing a group that can create looks but has not sustained enough of them to change the direction of its season.
