Blue Jackets Fans Are Already Debating One Zach Werenski Concern

Zach Werenski's scoring drought is sparking debate, but his solid defensive play and consistent offensive stats prove there's no need to panic just yet.

Zach Werenski hasn’t scored a goal through the Columbus Blue Jackets’ first nine games, and that’s been enough to get people talking.

With Columbus off to a 4-5 start, the usual early-season anxiety has settled in, and Werenski has found himself in the crosshairs. Some fans have already started asking, “When are we going to get Norris Werenski back?”

and “What is wrong with Zach Werenski?” But the numbers say there’s a lot less drama here than the noise suggests.

Through nine games, Werenski has 2 goals, 4 assists and 34 shots. That lines up closely with what he’s done in recent seasons over the same stretch: 3 goals and 5 assists with 32 shots in 2024-25, 1 goal and 5 assists with 24 shots in 2023-24, 2 goals and 2 assists with 30 shots in 2022-23, and 2 goals and 4 assists with 25 shots in 2021-22. The only real outlier is his rookie year.

Beyond the scoring line, Werenski’s underlying pace is eye-catching. He’s tracking toward 205 blocked shots, which would top his career high by more than 70.

He’s on pace for 121 D-zone takeaways, far beyond his personal best of 75 from last season. His current pace also points to 597 shot attempts and 261 shots, which would both sit near the top of his career totals.

On top of that, he’s been on the ice for 56.5% of the Blue Jackets’ goals this season.

There is one area that stands out in a negative way: his giveaways and defensive-zone giveaways are tracking toward career-worst numbers. That’s the part worth watching. But the idea that Werenski’s season is suddenly off the rails because he hasn’t scored yet doesn’t really hold up against the rest of the production.

Columbus is back on the road Tuesday night to face the Philadelphia Flyers.

Blue Jackets Prospect Evan Jardine Is Forcing His Way Onto The Radar

Evan Jardine is already making a noticeable first impression in his first college hockey season, and that matters in Columbus. The Blue Jackets fourth-round pick has stepped into Ohio State and quickly found a way to produce, carrying over the promise he showed with the Youngstown Phantoms into a faster, bigger stage.

The early returns have given the Blue Jackets something worth tracking closely. Jardine has been around the puck, around the net and around the scoring chances in a way that suggests his development is moving in the right direction, even if the bigger test will be sustaining it over a full college season. For a prospect group that is always looking for breakout signs, he is starting to look less like a long-term flier and more like a name that belongs on the radar. [Read more 🡒]

Blue Jackets Suddenly Face A Dmitri Voronkov Decision Fans Wont Ignore

The Blue Jackets have found themselves with an unexpected bit of late-summer interest around Dmitri Voronkov, and it is the kind of development that can quickly turn into a bigger roster conversation. Clubs are checking in on the forward, which puts Columbus in a familiar spot as teams look for value and scoring depth while trying to sort out their own offseason priorities.

For now, the calls are just that, calls, and there is no indication the situation is headed in one direction or another. But Voronkov is enough of a notable piece that any trade buzz around him will be watched closely in Columbus, especially with other teams around the league juggling their own cap decisions, free-agent questions and roster needs.
