Adam Fantilli is still without a contract, and the clock is ticking toward Blue Jackets training camp.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman said on NHL Network that there’s still “a gap” in the talks between Fantilli and Columbus, and he tied part of that divide to the market shift after Leo Carlsson signed his new deal.
“I hadn't heard much, except there was a gap. I think there was a before-Carlsson and an after-Carlsson price with Fantilli.”
NHL Rumour Report later shared Friedman’s comments.
Carlsson, the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, signed a five-year, $90 million offer sheet from the Philadelphia Flyers. Anaheim matched it, and that pushed his AAV to $18 million.
Fantilli went No. 3 in that same draft, and the numbers being floated around his camp and the Blue Jackets still don’t line up. Reports have Columbus in the $12 million to $12.5 million range, while Fantilli’s side could be aiming closer to $15 million per year.
He’s coming off a three-year entry-level deal that carried a $950,000 AAV, and he remains a restricted free agent without arbitration rights. Columbus is set to open training camp on Sept. 17, so there’s still a little time for the sides to work this out.
Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell sounded confident the deal will get done before camp.
Speaking to The Columbus Dispatch, Waddell said the team remains in touch with Fantilli and his agent.
“We're in communication. There's a little difference of opinion right now, which is normal, and I'm confident that we'll have him done before training camp,” Waddell said.
He also believes Fantilli wants to be there when camp begins.
“I'm pretty confident that I don't think he wants to miss training camp and we don't want him to miss training camp.”
The contract length is part of the discussion, too. Columbus wants to go beyond five years, but Waddell said getting that kind of term has been tough. Money remains another major piece of the puzzle.
“The long-term contracts are becoming more and more difficult to get done. So, obviously, we're trying to get as much term as we possibly can.
That's one of the differences we have, and then money is obviously a big part of it. The hope is more (than five years in term), but we'll see how these negotiations all go.
You've got to get to where the money's going to be, and then the term will come after that.”
Fantilli played all 82 games for Columbus last season and finished with 24 goals and 59 points. Through 213 career NHL games, he has 67 goals and 140 points.
