The Columbus Blue Jackets are still waiting on Adam Fantilli’s next contract, but GM Don Waddell says he’s not sweating it. With training camp only eight days away, the talks have become a priority - and Waddell is calling his confidence level “100%.”
Speaking to The Hockey Writers on Wednesday, Waddell said the club and Fantilli’s camp are in steady contact and moving toward a resolution. There’s no deal on the verge of being announced yet, but the tone from Columbus is clear: both sides expect this to get finished before camp opens next Thursday.
“I’m 100% that we’ll get this thing done,” Waddell said. “It’s not imminent, but we’re talking on a pretty regular basis now.
I talked to his agent over the weekend and going to talk again here today or tomorrow. So, as long as you are talking, I always feel like you’re going to find a way to get a solution for everybody and everybody’s happy.”
Fantilli was absent from the team’s annual golf outing at Double Eagle on Wednesday, something Waddell said he did not expect while negotiations are still ongoing.
The Fantilli situation is also part of a bigger picture for Columbus. Waddell said he’ll be meeting in the next week or so to revisit the team’s five-year plan, noting that the summer has shifted enough that the club needs to adjust. He pointed to the Leo Carlsson offer sheet as one of the developments that has changed the landscape.
“We lay out a five-year plan,” Waddell said. “We’re actually going to go through that here in the next week or so because the way the summer’s changed so much. We’re going to have to increase some guys, of course.”
Fantilli isn’t the only name tied into that long-term planning. Waddell also mentioned Kirill Marchenko’s next contract if he remains with the team after this season, along with Zach Werenski’s next deal in the shadow of Cale Makar’s record contract.
For now, though, the focus stays on Fantilli. Waddell said the Blue Jackets and agent Pat Brisson’s camp are talking regularly, and the club believes the deal will be in place before the forward has to report for camp.
