The Blue Jackets are already getting a little of everything this season: a huge opening-night punch, a forgettable trip to St. Louis, and a roster that’s still settling in while the games keep coming.
That’s the backdrop for the week of Oct. 11-18, 2026, and it’s a good place to start because Columbus is being asked to answer a bunch of questions at once. New faces are trying to fit in fast.
Core pieces are being locked up. The blue line is shuffling because of injuries.
And the early returns suggest this group is going to be judged on how well it handles that kind of constant adjustment.
One of the biggest developments came before the first puck even dropped, when the front office completed a multi-player deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs to bring in Matthew Knies. He wasted no time making his presence felt, delivering a multi-goal effort in his debut against Buffalo. His size on the wing and his work retrieving pucks below the goal line give Columbus a different look, especially for a top six that needed more muscle last winter.
Then there’s Adam Fantilli, whose long-term six-year extension gives the organization stability right down the middle. Early on, his playmaking and calm under pressure have stood out. With that deal done, the Blue Jackets can keep building around one of their young centerpieces without the noise that comes with contract uncertainty.
The other side of the story is what’s happening on defense. Ivan Provorov is on injured reserve with a lower-body issue, and that has forced Columbus to lean even harder on Zach Werenski, who continues to carry major minutes as the main force on the back end. Denton Mateychuk has also seen his role grow, taking on more ice time as the Blue Jackets patch things together.
Damon Severson’s return from injured reserve should help. He gives the top four a steadying presence, and his ability to move the puck out of trouble should take some pressure off Jet Greaves and Cam Talbot.
Greaves handled a tough divisional win over Pittsburgh well, but the five goals allowed against St. Louis were a reminder of what happens when coverage breaks down.
Up front, the Blue Jackets need more than just their headliners. The power play has to improve its zone entries if it’s going to keep up with stronger Eastern Conference teams, and depth scorers such as Danton Heinen and Ryan Lomberg need to chip in more often to keep opponents from zeroing in on the primary scoring line.
The defensive details matter just as much. Columbus has to stay accountable in its own end, cut down on turnover problems at the blue lines, and clean up the crease area if it wants this stretch to tilt in its favor.
The schedule will provide a real test. Florida and New York both come to Nationwide Arena, and those home games will demand tight, structured defense if Columbus wants to limit dangerous chances. Then the week finishes with a back-to-back in Minnesota, where the Blue Jackets will have to manage minutes carefully to stay sharp on the road.

Blue Jackets Have An Early Lineup Problem Luca Del Bel Belluz Could Solve
The Blue Jackets have spent the first stretch of the season looking like a team with enough scoring punch to stay in games, but not quite enough structure to keep them tidy at the other end. Through four games, Columbus has produced 12 goals and given up 14, a split that points to a roster still searching for the right balance, especially among its forward groups.
One possible answer is waiting in the wings in Luca Del Bel Belluz, whose presence would give the coaching staff another way to shuffle the middle-six mix and smooth out some of the early unevenness. Columbus has options, and the question now is less about whether there are enough forwards to work with than which combination can bring more consistency, deeper support and a lineup that better fits the way this team wants to play. Blue Jackets Just Sent A Small But Telling Message On Riley Bezeau
The Blue Jackets made a quiet roster move with Riley Bezeau, activating the forward from injured, non-roster status and sending him back to the Cleveland Monsters. It was the kind of transaction that can be easy to miss, but it did come with a notable wrinkle: Columbus also named him one of its alternate captains for the season.
For a player headed back to the AHL, thats a small but telling sign of how the organization views him. Bezeau may be on the move again in the standings sense, but the Blue Jackets clearly still want his presence in the mix, whether that means leadership in Cleveland now or a larger role later if circumstances open a door in Columbus. Denton Mateychuk Is Headed Toward A Blue Jackets Payday Debate
Denton Mateychuk is getting close to the point where his next Blue Jackets contract becomes more than a backdrop conversation. The young defenseman is entering the final season of his entry-level deal in Columbus, and his camp has already made clear it would be open to discussing an extension if the terms make sense.
For now, the situation is mostly about timing and value, two things that can move quickly once a team sees a player as part of its long-term core. Comparisons around the league suggest Mateychuk is the kind of defenseman whose next deal could land well above the usual bridge range, which is exactly why his next step is the sort of decision Columbus will want to get right before the market gets any louder.
