Blue Jackets Could Have A Sneaky Blue Line Battle Brewing

Could Matt Grzelcyk be the solution to the Columbus Blue Jackets' defensive depth concerns?

The Columbus Blue Jackets may have a case for bringing in a defenseman on a professional tryout, and Matt Grzelcyk looks like one of the more logical names to watch.

With the Blue Jackets’ blue line still in need of depth, a PTO invite would not be a surprise. There are still some unrestricted free agents available, and if Columbus does go that route, the fit could very well come on defense.

Grzelcyk stands out because he brings something the Blue Jackets could use: steady puck-moving ability. He may not be the most eye-catching defender on the market, but he has shown he can help drive offense from the back end. That was especially true in 2024-25 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, when he finished with career highs of 39 assists and 40 points in 82 games.

He then followed that up with 12 assists in 69 games for the Blackhawks this past season. Even with that drop from his peak year, the fact remains that Grzelcyk was a 40-point defenseman as recently as 2024-25, which is enough to make him worth a look on a tryout basis.

If he were to earn a contract out of camp, Grzelcyk could give Columbus another option on the bottom pair. He could also fit as the team’s seventh defenseman. Either way, the Blue Jackets would be deeper with the Massachusetts native in the mix.

For now, the question is whether Columbus decides to take that gamble and invite Grzelcyk to camp on a PTO.

Zach Werenski Just Gave Blue Jackets Fans Real Hope Amid Rumors

Zach Werenski has been one of the most important voices around the Blue Jackets this summer, and not just because of what he does on the ice. With trade speculation circling, the defenseman offered a clear sense of where his head is at, giving Columbus fans reason to believe the franchise cornerstone still sees a future here even as rumors continue to follow him.

The timing matters because this is the kind of noise that can shape an entire offseason, especially for a team trying to build something lasting. Werenskis comments helped steady that conversation without closing the door on anything else, and his willingness to address it now suggests Thursday may be the only time he deals with the speculation publicly, leaving the rest of the focus on what comes next in Columbus. Blue Jackets Fans Will Remember These Names From Jersey No. 46

Jersey No. 46 has been a quiet little thread in Blue Jackets history, worn by a handful of players whose Columbus stops ranged from brief auditions to longer runs through the organization. The list includes John Jackman, Filip Novk, Tom Ka, Dean Kukan and Joona Luoto, a mix that tells its own story about how the club has filled out rosters over the years, with NHL debuts, trades and time in the minors all part of the backdrop.

Dean Kukan stands out as the most familiar name in the group, while the others left their marks in different ways, whether through short-lived chances in Columbus or careers that continued elsewhere, including coaching and international play. Recent signings and player movement around the organization keep adding new layers to that jersey history, and No. 46 remains one of those numbers that connects present-day roster churn to a long list of players fans may remember only in passing.
