The Columbus Blue Jackets have moved to clear room on their blue line, placing defenseman Carson Soucy on waivers after activating Dante Fabbro yesterday.
If Soucy is claimed, he would be on to his fifth organization in three years. The Viking, Alberta, native started his NHL career with the Minnesota Wild in 2017-18 before being selected by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 Expansion Draft.
Soucy’s best stretch came in Seattle, where he carved out a steady role over two seasons. In the 2021-22 and 2022-23 campaigns, he put up 13 goals and 37 points in 142 games, posted a plus-25 rating and averaged 16:55 of ice time per night. He also added 169 blocked shots and 261 hits, while finishing with a 51.4% CorsiFor and a 90.5% on-ice SV% at even strength.
That performance earned him another multi-year deal, a three-year, $9.75MM contract carrying a $3.25MM AAV with the Vancouver Canucks in free agency. Things went sideways quickly after that. Injuries piled up right away, Soucy fell out of favor in Vancouver, and the Canucks eventually shipped him to the New York Rangers for a 2025 third-round pick.
The move did not spark a turnaround. Soucy played 62 games for the Rangers and recorded four goals and 11 points with a plus-6 rating, while averaging just under 17 minutes a game. The underlying numbers were respectable, but his lack of speed pushed him down the depth chart and into bottom-pairing minutes.
New York moved on again nearly 11 months later, sending Soucy to the New York Islanders on January 26th of last season in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick. His stint with the Islanders, by the source’s telling, did not go well.
This season, Soucy resurfaced with Columbus after converting a professional tryout agreement with the club. Despite the skating issues, head coach Rick Bowness paired him mostly with Erik Gudbranson.
That tandem posted a 22.2% xGoals% at MoneyPuck, the worst mark on the team by a wide margin. Through seven games with the Blue Jackets, Soucy has one assist and has averaged 14:45 of ice time.

Blue Jackets Blue Line Just Got A Needed Twist
The Blue Jackets finally have another option for their blue line after activating Dante Fabbro from injured reserve, a move that comes after he spent the first four weeks of the regular season sidelined by a broken hand suffered in preseason. His return gives Columbus a little more structure on the back end at a time when the club has had to manage its defense with limited pieces.
Fabbro is expected to slide onto the bottom pairing with Erik Gudbranson, adding a familiar-looking combination to the mix. Ivan Provorov remains on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, so even with Fabbro back, Columbus is still waiting for its defense corps to get back to full strength. [Read more 🡒]
Blue Jackets Nearly Let Two Points Slip Before One Star Saved Them
For a while, it looked like Columbus was headed for a comfortable night after jumping in front early and building a 3-0 lead in the first period. Adam Fantilli, Denton Mateychuk and Trevor Zegras all played key roles in getting the Blue Jackets in position to control the game, and the pace suggested they might cruise to two points without much drama.
Philadelphia had other ideas and dragged the game back to even before Columbus needed one last burst to escape with the win. Kent Johnson provided it in overtime, finishing the game off for a 4-3 Blue Jackets victory and turning what had been a squandered lead into a result Columbus could still take home. [Read more 🡒]
Blue Jackets Get An Early Road Test That Could Say A Lot
The Blue Jackets are stepping into their first real road trip of the season with a stop in Philadelphia, and it comes at a useful time for a club trying to build something off a recent overtime win. The Flyers have been slow out of the gate but have shown more life lately, which makes this an early measuring-stick game for Columbus as it tries to settle in away from home and keep carrying over the energy from its last result.
Columbus also should get a boost on the blue line, with one defenseman expected back from injured reserve for the matchup. Even with the Flyers still searching for consistency, this is the kind of game that can quietly reveal a lot about where a young Blue Jackets team stands after a bumpy start, especially with both clubs bunched closely together in the standings despite Philadelphia having played more games.
