TJ Rumfield had a night to remember, and he made sure his friends and fans did too. With a crowd full of supporters, including some familiar faces from his Virginia Tech days, Rumfield delivered a memorable moment in the Rockies' 4-3 loss to the Marlins. His second-inning solo home run was not just a personal milestone but a glimpse of his potential in the big leagues.
Clutching the ball from his first Major League homer, Rumfield said, “It’s a dream come true.” And while he’s still deciding the fate of that prized baseball, the bat from his first hit might find its way to a couple of lucky recipients.
In his Major League debut, Rumfield showed his skills with a broken-bat single off Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara and a walk. But it was Saturday’s homer off Eury Pérez that really turned heads. Rumfield, acquired from the Yankees during the offseason, earned his spot with a spring performance that included a .286/.359/.554 slash line, five homers, and 13 RBIs.
Facing two formidable pitchers in Alcantara and Pérez, Rumfield didn’t back down. Alcantara’s reputation as a two-time All-Star and 2022 Cy Young Award winner is well-earned, while Pérez is quickly making a name for himself. Rumfield’s first Major League strikeout came against Pérez, who clocked in at 99.5 mph.
The Rockies’ pitching staff also showed promise, though they couldn’t quite seal the deal. Kyle Freeland’s two misplaced curveballs and Michael Lorenzen’s cutter to Liam Hicks, which resulted in a two-run homer, were pivotal moments. Lorenzen noted, “Guys make adjustments, and that’s just baseball.”
Despite the loss, Rumfield’s homer and Ezequiel Tovar’s two-run shot were highlights. Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer praised the team’s approach against Pérez, saying, “We had good at-bats and made him change his game plan.”
Rumfield’s performance is already making waves. “TJ’s first homer, against that guy?
That’s pretty special,” Schaeffer remarked. Rumfield’s 423-foot shot to right-center landed in the glove of a young fan, a moment he wishes he could have shared.
Reflecting on the game, Rumfield said, “I settled in yesterday. Today, I was just thinking about doing what I do, which is damage.” And with that mindset, he’s off to an impressive start in his Major League journey.
