The Rockies are making strategic moves as they trim their roster for Opening Day in Miami. Among the latest cuts are infielder Adael Amador and right-hander Tanner Gordon, both optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Tanner Gordon's spring training performance was impressive, showcasing a new two-seam fastball and an adjusted changeup grip. He posted a stellar 1.64 ERA over 11 innings, highlighted by a solid outing against the Angels, where he allowed just one run on four hits, with one walk and four strikeouts. Despite this, Gordon finds himself edged out in a competitive battle for the final rotation spot.
The competition included Ryan Feltner and former top prospect Chase Dollander. Dollander, despite an inconsistent spring, is expected to secure the fifth starter role.
His recent outing saw him give up five runs (four earned) on five hits, with three walks and four strikeouts over 3.2 innings. With a fastball touching 100 mph and a sharp slider, Dollander has the raw talent but needs to refine his command, as evidenced by his seven walks in 14 innings.
Ryan Feltner, returning from an injury-plagued 2025, also struggled with command, allowing ten walks in 11.2 innings this spring. He managed to strike out 14 batters, showing potential as a high-upside bullpen option, though control remains a concern.
The Rockies appear focused on Dollander's development, opting to keep him in the rotation to build confidence, despite Gordon's strong spring showing. It's a decision that reflects a broader strategy, emphasizing long-term growth over immediate results, as players like Gordon continue to hone their skills in Triple-A.
