Rockies Fans May Hate What This Hunter Goodman Trade Idea Suggests

The Texas Rangers may target Colorado's Hunter Goodman in a bold offseason move to fortify their catching lineup and boost their playoff chances.

The Texas Rangers head into the winter with work to do, and catcher looks like one of the spots that needs the most attention.

Their season went all the way to game 162, but the finish was brutal: Texas lost its final game, watched the Houston Astros take the AL West, and then saw the Astros drop the first two games of the Wild Card Series. That kind of ending tends to sharpen an offseason, and the Rangers should be one of the busier teams around.

One possible fix comes via Colorado. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller floated a trade that would send All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman from the Rockies to Texas, with the Rangers giving up right-handed pitching prospects Caden Scarborough and AJ Russell, along with catching prospect Malcolm Moore.

Miller pointed to the uncertainty at the position for Texas, noting, "For Texas, the catcher spot in the lineup was a season-long struggle, and they have both Elias Díaz and Kyle Higashioka hitting free agency. They're also slated to lose primary DH Joc Pederson, so a slugging C/DH would be a huge pickup for them."

Goodman would fit that description. Miller noted that, "Lost amid the embarrassment of the Rockies enduring yet another season of more than 100 losses, Hunter Goodman did quite a bit of mashing with 41 home runs in his 574 trips to the plate," adding, "That translates to a home run in 7.1 percent of his plate appearances, which was the highest ratio in the majors this season."

There’s also the usual Coors Field question, but Miller suggested the power should travel just fine. Goodman actually hit better on the road than at home, which eases some of the concern about how his bat would play outside Colorado.

His glove is described as slightly below average, but the bat is the selling point here, and it’s a loud one. For a Rangers club trying to move from middling to legitimate American League contender, a move like this would give the lineup a real jolt.

Rockies Suddenly Have An Outfield Debate Fans Might Actually Enjoy

The Rockies did get a little better in 2026, and part of the reason was the emergence of a few younger pieces who gave the roster some life. Hunter Goodman, TJ Rumfield and especially Cole Carrigg helped push the team forward, with Carrigg making his major league debut in June and quickly looking like more than just a midseason curiosity. By the time the season wrapped, he had put himself in position to open next year as the likely starter in center field.

That leaves Colorado with something it has not always had in recent years: an outfield discussion that feels layered instead of desperate. Carrigg, Mickey Moniak and Jake McCarthy are expected to form the starting group, while Charlie Condon, Zac Veen and Troy Johnston give the club real depth behind them. For a team still trying to climb out of the National League Wests lower tier, the question is no longer whether it has enough bodies to fill the grass. It is how much upside this group can finally deliver. [Read more 🡒]

Rockies Cannot Afford Another Costly Pitching Mistake This Winter

The Rockies head into another winter with a familiar problem: too many questions on the mound and not enough reliable answers. After past offseasons leaned on older arms, Colorado is again at a point where the pitching staff has to be reworked with more care, especially in the rotation and bullpen, even as the offense has enough talent to keep the club from starting from scratch.

This time, the margin for error feels thinner because the organization needs help that can actually move the needle without clogging the path for younger players. Michael King, Freddy Peralta and Sonny Gray are the kinds of names that fit the conversation, but the bigger lesson is clear enough already: the Rockies cannot keep spending winter after winter on veteran pitching in the wrong age range and expect the same problems to disappear.
