Ezequiel Tovar Poised for Major Comeback with the Rockies in 2026

After an injury-plagued 2025, Ezequiel Tovar is poised for a remarkable comeback in 2026, with eyes on both the Spring Training and World Baseball Classic.

At just 23, Ezequiel Tovar has already shown he’s a force to be reckoned with. In 2024, the Rockies' shortstop dazzled both at the plate and in the field, becoming one of the league's standout players. Playing in 157 games, Tovar snagged his first Gold Glove, supported by an impressive 15 Outs Above Average (OAA) and a 16 fielding run value.

But his talents weren't confined to defense. Tovar wielded a hot bat, hitting .269/.295/.469, leading the league with 45 doubles, and adding 26 home runs to his tally. His 75 extra-base hits were a testament to his offensive prowess.

Fast forward to 2025, and it was a different story. Injuries took their toll, limiting Tovar to just 95 games.

A hip injury early in the season, followed by an oblique strain in June, hampered his play. Despite the setbacks, Tovar adapted, increasing his walk rate to 5.4% and trimming his strikeout rate by 3.7%.

Known for his aggressive approach, especially on the first pitch, Tovar seemed to dial it back last season. This shift was likely a result of adjusting to his post-injury form. His defense also saw a dip, with his Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) dropping to -2 and his OAA to 3.

The big question for Tovar is whether he’ll maintain this patient approach or revert to his former aggressive style at the plate. Rockies fans won't have to wait long to find out. Tovar is set to represent Venezuela in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, running from March 5-17.

Colorado kicks off their Spring Training against the Arizona Diamondbacks this Friday afternoon. All eyes will be on how many at-bats Tovar gets before the WBC.

Venezuela starts their Pool D campaign on March 6, facing the Netherlands at 12:00 PM ET at loanDepot Park in Miami, Florida.

After a stellar 2024 and a challenging 2025, Tovar has shown what he’s capable of. If he can stay healthy, he might just be the Rockies' key to a breakout year.
