Elsewhere around the league, Pete Alonso reached a major milestone at Citi Field on Tuesday, Brayan Rocchio delivered another clutch finish for Cleveland, and rookie outfielder Cole Carrigg put together a huge night for Colorado.
Alonso’s 300th career homer came in the ninth inning with the Orioles down by one against Kodai Senga. The blast set off a huge bat toss, loud cheers, and even a curtain call for the opposing player.
“ I’ve just never seen anything like that before,” Mets righty Sean Manaea told reporters, including Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. “ The guys in here, we are grinding our butts off and stuff like that happens.
But I’ve never seen anything like that. It’s kind of crazy.”
Baltimore still went on to win in 11 innings after Coby Mayo hit an inside-the-park home run.
Cleveland and Chicago have split the first two games of a key three-game series, and the Guardians nearly fell behind in the set after the White Sox won Monday on an all-time at-bat from Tristan Peters. But Rocchio came through again on Tuesday.
The infielder, who was also at the center of Cleveland’s walk-off win over the Tigers in early September, came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with two runners in scoring position and sent a fly ball just beyond the reach of left fielder Sam Antonacci. That swing tied the game and brought home the winning run, pulling the Guardians to within a half-game of the White Sox in the AL Central.
Carrigg’s night for the Rockies was just as loud. The rookie outfielder collected four hits, launched two homers, and drove in five runs in a win over the Padres.
He now has three home runs in the series after going deep against Bradgley Rodriguez on Monday night. After a slow August, Carrigg has heated up in September, posting a .957 OPS.
His splits are still stark: a .970 OPS at Coors Field and a .669 mark away from home. Colorado will play eight of its final 11 games at home.
