In Scottsdale, Arizona, the Rockies' rising star Charlie Condon is making waves in the MLB Pipeline Top 100 prospects list. Drafted third overall in 2024, Condon has already proven his worth with record-setting power at the University of Georgia. As he steps into his first Major League Spring Training, the Rockies are eager to see what he brings to the table.
Condon, 22, has shown versatility on the field, a crucial asset given the crowded competition for first base in Denver. While he spent the majority of last season at first base, he also showcased his adaptability by playing in the Arizona Fall League and logging time at various positions.
Manager Warren Schaeffer gave Condon a start in right field against the Diamondbacks, a position he hadn’t played in a professional regular-season game. This decision was backed by Condon’s preparation and willingness to expand his skill set.
The Rockies’ camp included a “skill development hour,” allowing players like Condon to hone their offensive, defensive, and baserunning abilities. Despite focusing on first base, Condon was ready when called upon to diversify his play.
“I figured I wouldn’t be limited to first base here,” Condon shared. “This offseason, I worked on outfield skills, anticipating this need.”
His proactive approach has not gone unnoticed. Schaeffer appreciates Condon’s work ethic, noting his proficiency across multiple positions. “He’s got a chance to play in those spots,” Schaeffer remarked.
Condon’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Last year, a fractured left wrist sidelined him during Minor League camp, following a right hand injury that affected his batting average at High-A Spokane. However, Condon’s resilience shone through as he made 531 plate appearances over 121 games, gaining valuable experience across various leagues.
Reflecting on his setbacks, Condon said, “I learned not to take health for granted. I feel more prepared now.”
Condon’s performance at Spokane was impressive, hitting .312/.431/.420 over 35 games. He faced ups and downs at Hartford but finished strong in the Arizona Fall League, batting .337 with a grand slam among his highlights. His efforts earned him the Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award, a testament to his character and leadership.
As the season approaches, Condon is likely headed to Triple-A Albuquerque. His focus remains on playing his best baseball, wherever he lands. “My goal is to showcase my skills and contribute to the organization’s success,” Condon stated.
