Yukiko Ikedo Gives Colorado A Needed Singles Boost At Regionals

Yukiko Ikedo navigates weather challenges and fierce competition to secure her place in the main draw at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, showcasing her skill and determination on the court.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Yukiko Ikedo put together a clean two-win run Tuesday at the ITA Mountain Regional Championship, and the Colorado second-year is through to the main draw after surviving a third-set tiebreaker in her second match of the day.

Ikedo was the only Buff in action Tuesday, and after a string of morning rain delays, she and Colorado coaches Anthony Pham and Erick Garcia made the trip from Provo to Salt Lake City to play inside the University of Utah’s indoor courts.

Garcia said Ikedo kept things simple and steady throughout the day.

"She played super consistent," Garcia said. "She trusted her game, came to the net at the right times and made the right decisions."

Her opening-round qualifier against Weber State’s Tori Jeppson went the way Colorado would have wanted early. Ikedo rolled through the first set 6-1, then had to work harder in the second before closing out the first-year Wildcat 6-4 and moving on in straight sets.

That set up a tougher test with a spot in the main draw on the line. Against New Mexico’s Meghna Anand, Ikedo stayed close in the first set and edged it 6-4, but the Lobo answered by taking the second 6-3 behind an emphasis on serving and forcing a deciding set.

Ikedo responded well when it mattered most. She jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the tiebreaker, kept control from there and finished off the match 10-6, leaning on her work at the net to put away the win and punch her ticket to Wednesday’s main draw.

"We are proud of the way she competed and handled herself ," Pham said. "Yuki and the rest of her teammates have some good opportunities tomorrow."

Ikedo will open the primary draw Wednesday against a Nevada opponent. She’ll be joined by teammates Lera Alexin, Ema Bubalo, Willow Gretsch, Pia Rebec and Louise Ternstroem as Colorado looks to advance in both singles and doubles play at regionals.

Colorado Faces A Familiar Isaac Wilson Problem Against Utah

Isaac Wilsons move from Utah to Colorado has added a little extra edge to an already interesting matchup, and Utah coach Morgan Scalley didnt sound like someone surprised by the challenge ahead. Scalley praised Wilsons arm talent while also stressing the basic truth of the sport: it takes more than one player to win a game. With Wilson and cornerback Jason Stokes Jr. both set to line up against their former school, the Buffaloes are dealing with the kind of familiar crossover that can make a regular-season game feel a little more personal.

For Colorado, the intrigue goes beyond the roster links and into how much Utah already understands about the players it helped develop. Scalleys comments made clear that the reunion angle only goes so far, since both sides know this is still about execution, not nostalgia. Even so, when a quarterback and a defensive back arrive from the same program and end up staring down their old teammates, the matchup naturally carries a little extra weight. [Read more 🡒]

Colorado Tennis Finally Has The Depth For A Real Regional Push

Colorados tennis team heads into the 2026 ITA Mountain Regional Championship at BYU from Oct. 13-17 with a level of depth it has been building toward for some time. The Buffaloes will travel with seven players and enter the event near full strength, a setup that gives them more options in both singles and doubles than they have had in past regional runs. Coaches have been upbeat about how the group has prepared, and the bracket reflects a team with enough quality to contend across multiple matches.

Lera Alexin and Ema Bubalo give Colorado a seeded doubles tandem, while Yukiko Ikedo is the lone Buffalo in the qualifying singles draw and six teammates are already set for the main draw. For a program trying to turn promising pieces into a regional push, that kind of balance matters because every round can shift the path toward nationals. The question now is not whether Colorado has enough players to compete, but how far that depth can carry them when the tournament begins. [Read more 🡒]

Deion Sanders Sends Colorado Fans A Blunt Warning Before Utah

Colorados trip to Utah comes with more than the usual conference edge. Deion Sanders spent his time with the media making clear that the Buffs are walking into a difficult matchup, one against a team he respects on both sides of the ball. He singled out Utah coach Morgan Scalley, pointed to the Utes offense and defense as major problems for any opponent, and left little doubt that this is a game Colorado will need to handle with urgency.

The stakes only feel higher because of where Colorados offense has been lately, and the betting line reflects that reality with Utah favored by 15.5 points. Sanders also settled one of the teams biggest questions by indicating Isaac Wilson will get the start at quarterback, a choice that keeps Julian Lewis waiting a bit longer. Against a Utah defense built to test every weakness, the Buffs are going to need more than a cleaner script to keep this one competitive. [Read more 🡒]
