Buffs Ready for Homecoming Against Stetson
Boulder fans, it’s time to welcome back your No. 13 Colorado Buffaloes, who are set to face the Stetson Hatters this Sunday. After a challenging 21-day road trip, the Buffs return home with a 4-2 record, eager to showcase their skills indoors at the Ford Practice Facility due to some uncooperative weather forecasts.
The road trip was no walk in the park, featuring three games against top-tier teams. Colorado snagged a victory against then-No.
22 Army but narrowly missed wins against No. 18 Stony Brook and No.
8 Michigan, losing by a combined total of just three goals. Despite the losses, the Buffs showed resilience, keeping the score tight and mounting impressive comebacks.
Head Coach Ann Elliott Whidden is focused on refining the Buffs’ offensive execution. “We just have to do better,” she emphasized after the Michigan game. “Executing in possessions and valuing them is key, especially as we transition from defense to offense.”
Two areas needing improvement are clears and draw controls. Currently, the Buffs are struggling in the Big 12 with an 84.1% clear rate and a 44.0% draw control rate.
This is a dip from last season when they ranked in the top 25 nationally with 91.2% and 56.1%, respectively. However, they’re compensating by excelling in forcing turnovers, leading the Big 12 with 10.17 caused turnovers per game.
Standouts like Jess Peluso, Lily Assini, and Molly Reed are making waves, ranking third, fourth, and fifth in the conference for caused turnovers.
Coach Whidden remains optimistic, noting, “We’re finding ways to stay competitive, especially with our defensive efforts. Winning the turnover and ground ball battles keeps us in the game, even when draw controls aren’t in our favor.”
As for Stetson, they’ll be warmed up for their Boulder debut after facing Denver on Friday. Historically, the Buffs have bested the Hatters in their previous two matchups in Florida. Stetson, still searching for their first win this season, has been allowing an average of 20 goals per game, which could spell opportunity for Colorado’s attack.
