BOULDER - After a challenging season at linebacker, the Colorado Buffaloes have bolstered their defense by snagging three seasoned players from the transfer portal: Gideon "ESPN" Lampron, Tyler Martinez, and Liona Lefau.
Liona Lefau, a standout from Texas, made his move to Colorado official in January. During his tenure with the Longhorns, Lefau, hailing from Hawaii, showcased his skills in 42 games, starting 22 of them. His impressive stats include 139 tackles, eight tackles for loss, an interception, and a forced fumble.
Reflecting on his decision to leave Texas, Lefau shared, "After discussions with my family and some soul-searching, we felt it was time for a fresh start."
So why did he choose Colorado?
"Entering the transfer portal felt like speed dating," Lefau explained. "You need to know what you're looking for in a school.
I wanted a team with hunger and drive. Colorado brought in new talent, and everyone here is eager to prove themselves."
His connection with head coach Deion Sanders and linebackers coach/defensive coordinator Chris Marve was also a significant factor. Lefau appreciates Marve's intense coaching style.
"Coach Marve is demanding, pushing you to be your best every day," Lefau said. "That kind of drive helps elevate your game."
At 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds, Lefau's journey began at Kahuku High School, where he was honored as the MaxPreps Hawaii Player of the Year in 2022. He was a sought-after recruit, with interest from Oregon, Texas Tech, Utah, Michigan State, among others.
As he settles into his first spring in Boulder, Lefau is energized by the competitive spirit within the team.
"Everyone's pushing hard, trying to showcase their abilities," Lefau noted. "This competitive edge raises the bar for all of us. You can’t afford to slack off, not even for a moment."
