Colorado is once again in the market for a new defensive tackles coach - its fifth in just four years under Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders. The latest departure? Domata Peko Sr., who’s heading to the NFL to join the Pittsburgh Steelers as their new defensive line coach after just one season in Boulder.
Peko, a longtime NFL veteran turned college coach, brought both experience and energy to Colorado’s defensive front in 2025. His presence was felt not just in the trenches, but in the locker room, where his leadership resonated with players during a season of transition and growth. Now, he’s taking that same fire to Pittsburgh, where he'll reunite with the pro game - this time from the sidelines.
In a farewell message shared through one of Coach Prime’s in-house media platforms, Peko expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Buffaloes program and its players.
“Just want to give a huge shoutout to everyone here at the CU Buff nation, man,” Peko said. “A special thank you to Coach Prime, coach Rob Livingston, coach George Helow - some of my best friends here.
I appreciate everything. I appreciate the love for the last year.”
Peko’s words weren’t just a goodbye - they were a message of belief in what’s being built in Boulder. He addressed the players directly, especially the new faces just arriving on campus: “Keep grinding.
Like I always say, just do your best and he’ll handle the rest. I just want to encourage you with that.
Something special is brewing here at CU. It is super hard for me to leave it.
But I know you guys are in great hands here, brother. I’ll be rooting for you all the way from Pittsburgh.”
For Colorado, this coaching turnover is nothing new. Since Sanders took over the program, the Buffs have experienced a high rate of staff movement - a byproduct of the program’s evolving identity and the national spotlight that surrounds it. While that kind of churn can be a challenge for continuity, it also speaks to the caliber of coaches Sanders is bringing in - ones who are quickly drawing attention from the next level.
Peko’s jump to the NFL is another example of that. His brief stint at Colorado showcased his ability to connect with young players and translate his NFL experience into college development. Now, he’ll get the chance to coach professionals again, this time shaping the Steelers’ defensive front.
As for the Buffs, the search begins - again. Coach Prime and his staff will be looking for someone who can not only coach up the defensive tackles but also match the culture and energy that’s become the hallmark of this Colorado rebuild. Whoever steps into that role will inherit a group that’s been molded by a pro’s perspective and will be expected to carry that standard forward.
One thing’s clear: Peko may be gone, but his impact in Boulder won’t be forgotten anytime soon. And with the NFL calling, it’s a testament to the kind of talent Colorado is attracting - both on the field and on the sidelines.
