The Colorado Buffaloes just added a new name to their future secondary - and it’s one that could make an early impact in Boulder.
On Thursday night, Davon Dericho, a three-star cornerback out of Miami Killian High School, announced his commitment to Colorado. The 5-foot-9 defensive back made it official on social media, thanking God and tagging the Buffaloes while proudly declaring his next step.
This marks Colorado’s first verbal commitment in the 2027 recruiting class - a significant get for Deion Sanders, who continues to build out his roster with versatile, high-upside athletes. Dericho projects as a nickel corner at the Power 4 level, and his skill set suggests he could see the field sooner rather than later.
Let’s talk about the tape and the numbers. Over 20 games at Miami Killian, Dericho racked up 98 tackles - an impressive total for a corner - along with 19 tackles for loss, nine sacks, four interceptions, and three forced fumbles.
That kind of production jumps off the stat sheet. He’s not just a cover guy; he’s a physical, downhill defender who isn’t afraid to get involved in the run game or bring pressure off the edge.
In today’s game, where nickel corners are essentially starters, that versatility is gold.
Dericho’s athleticism doesn’t stop on the football field. He’s also a track standout, having qualified for the state championships in the 4x100 relay as a junior. That speed shows up in his game - whether he’s closing on a receiver or blitzing from the slot, he moves with a burst that’s hard to teach.
Recruiting-wise, Dericho had options. He picked Colorado over offers from Florida State, Indiana, Louisville, Pittsburgh, and Maryland - a solid list that speaks to his national appeal. According to 247Sports, he ranks as the No. 57 cornerback and No. 593 overall prospect in the 2027 class.
If his commitment holds, Dericho would be the first official pledge in Colorado’s 2027 class. Cornerback Dolph McDonald previously held that distinction after committing in December, shortly after offensive coordinator Brennan Marion arrived from Sacramento State. But McDonald decommitted in January, leaving a spot open for Dericho to step into the spotlight.
And of course, when asked why he chose Colorado, Dericho didn’t mince words: “It’s Deion Sanders. He’s the best to do it.”
Hard to argue with that. Sanders’ resume - Hall of Fame induction in 2011, eight Pro Bowl nods, six All-Pro selections, and two Super Bowl rings - makes him one of the most decorated defensive backs in football history. For a young cornerback looking to develop at the next level, there may be no better mentor.
With Dericho on board, Colorado continues to shape its identity under Coach Prime - fast, aggressive, and unafraid to go after top-tier talent. This commitment may be an early one for the class of 2027, but it sends a clear message: the Buffaloes are building for the long haul, and they’re doing it with athletes who fit the vision.
