Colorado got a jolt from its overtime win over Kansas State, and Deion Sanders is clearly trying to ride that wave into Saturday’s road game at Arizona State.
On Tuesday, Sanders touched on a few of the biggest storylines around the Buffaloes, from the rise of Richard Young to the status of quarterback Julian Lewis. He also delivered a curious moment when asked about Colorado’s 2027 recruiting class, offering a glimpse of how much noise is swirling around the program right now.
The clearest on-field update came at running back. Young is coming off the best outing of his college career, piling up 120 yards on 24 carries with two touchdowns against Kansas State.
Sanders said before that game that Young would get plenty of work, and he backed that up. Now, after that breakout performance, Sanders confirmed Young will start again this weekend.
He didn’t go any further than that, though, leaving open how big the workload will be.
The other major update involved Lewis. Sanders said the quarterback is "doing well" after a medical emergency at Wednesday’s practice last week that led to a hospital stay. Sanders said he spoke with Lewis’ dad, but he didn’t provide any additional timeline or clarity on whether Lewis will return to the team.
Sanders also sounded encouraged by what he saw on the practice field Tuesday. He called it one of Colorado’s best sessions of the year and said the team responded after the staff changed things up.
"Today was one of our best practices of the season," Sanders said. "We changed it up a bit and they responded well."
He added that he believes "one day this season, we’re going to put it all together."
Then came the recruiting question. Sanders was asked about the 2027 class amid Colorado’s five-game losing streak and the chatter around his future with the program.
He paused before answering, said he talks to the recruits weekly and that "they’re good," then cut himself off mid-thought. Turning to his entourage, he said, "I can’t do that," and laughed off whatever he was about to say.
Sanders didn’t spell out the rest, but the moment made the point loud and clear: the outside noise is being heard. So are the recruits. Colorado’s 2027 class is currently ranked No. 35 nationally and third in the Big 12.

Deion Sanders History Suddenly Hangs Over Florida State Opening
Florida States decision to move on from Mike Norvell after a 3-5 start and a loss to Clemson has reopened one of college footballs more familiar coaching conversations, especially for anyone who remembers how quickly the Seminoles have gone from patience to urgency before. Rick Stockstill, a former Florida State quarterback, will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season while the school sorts through a broader reset that includes finding both a new head coach and athletic director.
President Richard McCullough framed the move as a response to the programs trajectory and called it a fresh start, which is exactly the kind of opening that tends to stir up old names around a high-profile job. For Colorado fans, Deion Sanders history in Tallahassee adds another layer to watch, even as the search itself remains in its early stages and the next step is still to be determined. [Read more 🡒]
Buffs Young Core Just Gave Fans A Reason To Believe
Colorado opened its season with a 94-59 win over Abilene Christian, and the most encouraging part for Tad Boyles group may have been the way its second-year players looked right away. Jalin Holland, Ian Inman and Josiah Sanders all showed clear growth, giving the Buffaloes a young foundation that looked more polished than it did a year ago. Holland led the way in scoring, while the overall performance suggested this roster may have more internal development than many expected heading into November.
The backdrop was a quiet one at the arena, with 4,420 on hand for Colorados season opener, the lowest turnout for a first game in Boyles 17 seasons. Even so, the Buffaloes had enough energy on the floor to make the crowd part of the story only in passing, not as the main event. If the early signs from Holland, Inman and Sanders hold, Colorado may have something worth building on beyond a single lopsided win. [Read more 🡒]
Colorados Bowl Push Runs Through An Arizona State Twist
Colorados push toward bowl eligibility now runs through a tricky Big 12 road test at Mountain America Stadium, where Arizona State brings a young but increasingly settled offense into the matchup. The Sun Devils are leaning on freshman starters at quarterback and running back, with Jake Fette set for his second start and Cardae Mack seeing a bigger role as the backfield workload grows.
There is also a familiar face on the other sideline in former Colorado receiver Omarion Miller, adding a little extra edge to a game already carrying plenty of stakes for the Buffaloes. Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham has tried to keep the focus on the field despite outside questions about coaching vacancies, and Colorado will have to navigate both the atmosphere and the uncertainty that comes with facing a team still finding its identity.
