Colorado’s first Big 12 road test of 2026 turned into the same familiar headache: penalties, stalled drives and a game that slipped away the moment the Buffaloes finally clawed back into it.
CU fell 23-13 at Baylor on Saturday afternoon in Waco, and for a team that has spent the early part of the season searching for an identity, this one offered another blunt answer. The Buffs committed eight penalties, struggled to stay out of their own end of the field and could only reach the red zone a few times as Baylor controlled the flow at McLane Stadium.
The loss dropped Colorado to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play. Baylor moved to 3-1 and 1-0.
Colorado did open with a little life. The Buffs leaned on the run early, piling up 44 yards across their first two possessions, and Elliott Arnold finished the opening quarter with a 24-yard field goal to put CU ahead 3-0. Baylor answered with a methodical 13-play, 54-yard march that ended with a 37-yard field goal, and from there the game started to tilt.
The second quarter was where Colorado lost ground. The Buffs produced just 54 yards over five drives, failed to convert on fourth-and-short midway through the period and watched Baylor turn that stop into points. The Bears needed only three plays and 48 yards before DJ Lagway hit Gavin Freeman on a 3-yard touchdown pass to make it 10-3.
Colorado also took a hit in the first half when wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. was injured and did not return, trimming the options available to the offense.
Julian Lewis started at quarterback and completed 11 of 16 passes in the first half, but the production never really matched the volume. He threw for just 75 yards and struggled when Baylor’s pressure showed up in late-down situations. That led to a change after halftime, with Isaac Wilson taking over for the second half.
Wilson at least gave Colorado a steadier look. The Buffs still spent too much time backed up near their own goal line, and they punted on each of his first three possessions. Baylor stretched the lead to 13-3 with a 27-yard field goal with 7:14 left in the third quarter, but Colorado answered with a field goal of its own to trim the margin to 13-6 after three.
Then came the brief burst that made it feel like the game might swing. Wilson found Joseph Williams for a 17-yard touchdown to tie it 13-13 early in the fourth quarter. Colorado had finally dragged itself even.
But the response from Baylor was immediate and decisive. DJ Lagway led a five-play, 65-yard drive on the next possession, and the Bears reclaimed the lead at 20-13. Baylor later added a 54-yard field goal to push the margin to 23-13, and when JaQuail Smith fumbled on Colorado’s next drive, that was essentially that.
Colorado now heads back to Folsom Field next Saturday to face No. 11 Texas Tech.
