Colorado Star Pearson Shatters Record in Thrilling 800 Meter Finish

Avery Pearson continued her dominant indoor season with a standout showing in Boston that rewrote the record books.

Avery Pearson Shines in Boston, Sets Personal Best in 800m as Buffaloes Wrap Strong Weekend

BOSTON - Avery Pearson continues to turn heads this indoor season, and Saturday was no exception. The Colorado Buffaloes standout delivered her best performance yet in the 800 meters, clocking a blistering 2:03.21 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University’s Track & Tennis Center. Not only did she shave nearly a full second off her previous personal best, but she also solidified her spot as the second-fastest woman in CU history in the event.

"She keeps winning races and that will continue to translate into faster and faster times," said Colorado Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Sean Carlson. And right now, that’s exactly what Pearson is doing - winning and getting faster.

Running in the second heat of the elite women’s 800m, Pearson didn’t just run a personal best - she dominated her section, crossing the line first and extending her undefeated streak in 800m heats this season. While her time placed her eighth overall in a loaded field, her performance continues to build momentum as the postseason nears.

The graduate student from Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, seems to have a bit of a connection with Boston. Her previous personal best also came here just two weeks ago at the BU John Thomas Terrier Classic. Maybe it’s the fast track, maybe it’s the energy in the building - either way, Pearson is clearly comfortable and confident in Beantown.

Also representing the Buffs on Saturday was senior Amanda Opp, who competed in the weight throw. Opp reached a mark of 15.21 meters (49 feet, 11 inches), finishing 15th in a competitive field. While the spotlight was on the track, Opp’s effort in the field helped round out a solid showing for Colorado's women’s squad.

The Valentine Invitational marked the conclusion of a two-day effort for the Buffs in Boston, with the men’s team competing Friday and the women taking center stage Saturday. Pearson’s performance was the highlight, but the trip as a whole provided valuable reps as the team gears up for the final stretch of the indoor season.

What’s Next

The Buffaloes return to Boulder next Friday, February 20, for the Colorado Last Chance meet at the Ford Practice Facility. It’ll be a special day on campus, starting with a senior recognition ceremony at 11 a.m. before the running events kick off at noon. It’s the final tune-up before the Buffs head to Lubbock for the Big 12 Indoor Championships on February 27-28.

With Pearson peaking at the right time and the team rounding into form, the Buffs look ready to make some noise down the stretch.

Results Recap

  • Avery Pearson - Elite Women’s 800m: 2:03.21 (Personal Record, 2nd-fastest in CU indoor history) 1st in her heat 8th overall
  • Amanda Opp - Women’s Weight Throw: 15.21m (49-11.0) 15th place

Pearson’s star is clearly on the rise, and if her current trajectory holds, she might not be done rewriting the record books just yet.
