Colorado’s recent win over Georgia Tech showed exactly how much the Buffaloes value flexibility.
Deion Sanders leaned on it all night. Guard Chauncey Gooden helped plug a hole at defensive tackle, and cornerback Boo Carter was sent off the edge to help finish off the field goal block that sealed the 14-13 upset. That kind of usage has long fit the Colorado blueprint, and now a prized recruit may be hinting at becoming the next version of that idea.
Four-star 2027 safety commit Gabe Jenkins, who plays at Imani Christian Academy in Pittsburgh, said in a postgame interview with Prospect Media over Labor Day Weekend that he sees himself as more than a one-position player.
“I've been playing every position since I was three years old. My nickname 'Jim Brown' started when I was running the ball,” Jenkins said.
“The reason why I chose Colorado because it's a good fit for me. I've got a chance to play on both sides of the ball.”
That kind of comment has to catch Colorado’s attention, especially with offensive coordinator Brennan Marion in the building. Marion has a Steel City connection of his own, having helped turn Pitt wide receiver Jordan Addison into an NCAA All-American in 2021.
Jenkins, who committed to Colorado on May 20, is listed at 5-11 and has the kind of range and angle discipline that makes him an easy projection at safety. But his own background suggests there may be more to mine.
In Imani Christian Academy’s 48-28 win over New Castle High on Sept. 4, Jenkins helped erase a 14-0 deficit and was part of a 36-point third quarter.
He also took wildcat quarterback snaps in that game.
He has grown into a 6-2 prospect, and that size only adds to the intrigue. The possibility of Jenkins getting a look in the backfield down the line is very real, especially in Marion’s “Go-Go” offense.
TribLive reported that Jenkins threw for 29 touchdowns and 1,763 yards, while also rushing for 1,411 yards and 15 more scores. He also had seven games with at least 100 yards during the 2025-26 campaign.
Colorado already has Julian “JuJu” Lewis as the more pocket-oriented quarterback in the room, and that showed up on the Buffaloes’ final drive against Georgia Tech, when he hit tight end Charlie Williams for the 20-yard touchdown. Marion’s system still leaves room for run-pass-option wrinkles, though, and that opens the door for a player like Jenkins to eventually get a look in multiple spots.
Andre Adams gives Colorado another more traditional quarterback commit in the 2027 class. Even so, Marion has built a reputation for creativity, and Jenkins could be the kind of athlete who gives him even more options once he arrives in Boulder.
