Colorado’s 2026 Big 12 slate already has a game circled in red.
The Buffaloes announced that their Oct. 3 matchup with Texas Tech at Folsom Field will be a stripe-out, setting the stage for what could be one of the biggest home dates on their schedule. It’s the second conference game for Colorado and the first one it will host, and the timing only adds to the weight of it.
Texas Tech arrives with a reputation that makes this a serious early test. The Red Raiders are viewed as one of the top defenses in the Big 12, even after losing edge rushers David Bailey and Romello Height to the NFL.
A.J. Holmes Jr. and Mateen Ibirogba are expected to keep that front dangerous.
There’s no easy side of the ball for Colorado to lean on, either. The Red Raiders will miss quarterback Brendan Sorsby, but backup Will Hammond has already shown plenty. And then there’s Cameron Dickey, who put up 1,124 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in 2025 and should give the Buffs a real problem.
That’s what makes this one so important for Colorado. The Buffaloes are set to come out of a stretch that includes three road games in their first four, so this home opener in conference play could set the tone for the rest of the month. A win here would do a lot for the stretch that follows.
And the stretch that follows is no joke. Colorado’s next game is another home date, this one against Utah, and the Utes are right there with Texas Tech when it comes to the toughest games on the schedule.
The Buffs also have a bye week between those two matchups, which means walking into that break after a loss could make the next one even harder to manage. Drop both, and any real shot at Big 12 contention starts to fade fast.
There’s also a path where this game carries national relevance. Colorado could realistically be 4-0 by the time Texas Tech comes to town, and even one slip before then could still leave the Buffs close to the AP Poll.
The Red Raiders, meanwhile, are expected to be unbeaten by then thanks to a soft non-conference slate. If Colorado can beat a likely ranked Texas Tech team, that would be enough to push it into the rankings.
For fans, the intrigue is obvious. The stripe-out, the stakes and the chance for a statement win make this one a tough ticket.
At the moment, the cheapest seat on VividSeats is listed at $91, making it Colorado’s fifth-most expensive game to attend. The only games currently priced higher are the road trips to Georgia Tech and Northwestern, the home game against Utah and the road game at Oklahoma State.
If the matchup ends up carrying the kind of weight it could, those prices may not stay there for long.

Before he has taken a snap in Boulder, Ernest Campbell is already drawing real respect around the Big 12. PFF College put out its list of the conferences highest-graded returning wide receivers for 2026, and the Colorado transfer landed fifth after a breakout season at Sacramento State that put him on the radar well beyond the FCS level.
Campbell arrives with more than just production, too. He led Sacramento State in receptions, yards and touchdowns last fall, and now he follows former Hornets coach Brennan Marion to Colorado, where Marion is the offensive coordinator. That familiarity should help the transition, but the bigger question is how quickly Campbell can turn that outside respect into production once the Buffaloes start throwing the ball his way. The Buffaloes have leaned into the idea that a visit to Boulder can sell itself, and a stadium with this kind of profile helps on the recruiting trail as much as it does on fall Saturdays.
