Colorado Men's Golf Team Tees Off with a Strong Start at The Goodwin
The University of Colorado men's golf team kicked off their campaign at Stanford's "The Goodwin" in Palo Alto, California, landing in eighth place after the first round. As the sun set, the Buffaloes wrapped up their day with a 2-under 278, marking their 22nd subpar team round of the season. Host Stanford leads the pack with an impressive 11-under 269, closely followed by Long Beach State and New Mexico.
Colorado's performance was bolstered by a strong finish. Despite a slow start, the team rallied with two birdies on their final hole, the par-4 9th, ensuring they ended the day in the red. The Buffs were among the last to tee off, completing their round in fading light after a grueling 5½-hour session.
The Buffs began their round on the back nine, initially struggling with a combined 8-over par on the first five holes. However, they turned it around, finishing the last four at 6-under, highlighted by seven birdies and just one bogey in the closing stretch. Impressively, Colorado was one of only five teams with all four scorers at par or better, a feat made more notable given the competitive field, which includes 14 top-50 ranked schools.
Head coach Roy Edwards praised his team's resilience, stating, "A really good job by the guys to finish the day under par. We labored through the round but were impressed by their very good attitudes and mental approaches."
Senior Hunter Swanson led the way with a 1-under 69, closing his round with a birdie on the 9th after a precise chip shot. Swanson's day included four birdies and 11 pars, offset by three bogeys. He showed resilience, overcoming early bogeys to play 3-under for the remainder of the round.
Joining Swanson with a 1-under 69 was graduate transfer Jackson Rivera, who demonstrated consistency with three birdies and a team-high 13 pars. Rivera, continuing his strong form from USC, ended his round with 13 consecutive holes at par or better.
Junior Brandon Knight posted an even-par 70, showcasing his ability to handle pressure with five birdies, including four on the back nine. Despite a double bogey on the front, Knight's birdie on the challenging 474-yard 12th hole was a standout moment.
Junior Ty Holbrook matched Knight's score, highlighted by his fifth eagle of the season on the par-5 16th. Holbrook was 3-under on the par-5s, contributing significantly to the team's overall performance.
Sophomore Parker Paxton faced challenges, finishing with a 4-over 74. However, he showed grit by ending his round with back-to-back birdies, a testament to his fighting spirit.
The individual leaderboard sees four players tied at 5-under 65, with a dozen others within striking distance. As the tournament progresses, Colorado will look to climb the standings, teeing off in the second round alongside TCU, Washington, and Northwestern.
The tournament honors legendary Stanford coach Wally Goodwin, and conditions have been mostly favorable, with temperatures peaking at 78 degrees. The Buffs have a rich history in this event, with past successes setting a high bar for this year's squad.
As the competition continues, all eyes will be on Colorado to see if they can leverage their strong start into a top finish.
