In the heart of Boulder, the buzz around Colorado's football program is palpable, and one name making waves is Preston Ashley. This young nickelback is already turning heads in spring practice, and it looks like he’s on track to earn some playing time as a true freshman.
Ashley, a former four-star recruit, has caught the eye of his position coach, Kevin Mathis, with his infectious energy and eagerness to learn. Mathis has been vocal about Ashley’s potential, highlighting his relentless drive and passion for the game.
"He's hungry for knowledge," Mathis noted. "The energy he brings is exactly what we need. He's got that juice and passion we’re looking for."
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 185 pounds, Ashley knows he has a big summer ahead. There's a learning curve, and Mathis is clear that while Ashley is making strides, there's still work to be done.
"He's got a long way to go in understanding our expectations and the defensive schemes," Mathis added. "But he's hustling and making plays, and that's exactly what we want."
Hailing from Brandon High School in Mississippi, Ashley has a strong pedigree. He played in two state title games and earned the honor of being named an Under Armour All-American. Ranked as the No. 28 safety nationally, his commitment to the Buffs last June was a big win for the program.
Ashley’s style of play is as bold as his ambition. "Fast, physical, and violent," he described it. This mindset aligns perfectly with the defensive creed and the vision of head coach Deion Sanders, making his transition to college football seamless.
With Coach Prime at the helm, freshmen like Cormani McClain and others have been given chances to shine in the secondary. Ashley is well aware of the opportunity in front of him and is determined to earn his spot on the field.
"Every day, I’m motivated to perform for the name on the front of my jersey and the name on my back," Ashley shared. "I pride myself on being the first one here and the last one off the field, always getting in extra work."
As the Buffs continue their preparations, all eyes will be on this promising freshman, eager to see if he can translate his potential into impact on game day.
