Colorado Faces Its Biggest Early Test Yet At Arizona State

Colorado seeks to break its losing streak against Arizona State in a high-stakes volleyball clash between top-25 teams.

No. 23 Colorado gets another crack at a ranked Big 12 opponent Friday night, traveling to Tempe for an 8 p.m.

MT meeting with No. 11 Arizona State.

The Buffaloes are coming off one of their biggest results of the season, a four-set win over No. 21 Baylor that delivered their first ranked conference victory of the year. Now they’ll try to carry that momentum into a matchup that comes with a familiar challenge: Colorado has never beaten Arizona State, and the Sun Devils have taken the last five meetings.

This will be the 30th all-time meeting between the programs, with Arizona State holding the edge in the series at 16-13. The last time these teams met, ASU pulled out a 3-2 win on Nov. 15, 2025, in Boulder.

Colorado enters at 11-3 overall and 2-2 in Big 12 play, while Arizona State is 11-3 and 2-1 in conference action. The Buffs also remain firmly inside the national top 25, moving to No. 23 in the AVCA-Taraflex Poll for their seventh straight week in the rankings.

A big part of Colorado’s profile has been its work at the net. The Buffs lead the Big 12 in blocks per set at 2.92, a mark that ranks eighth nationally. They’re also third in the league in opponent hitting percentage at .170.

Senior setter Jenna Ylivainio has been a steady engine for the offense, reaching 500 career assists in just 14 matches. That makes her the second-fastest player in Colorado volleyball history to hit the mark, trailing only Kelly Campbell, and the fastest in the rally-scoring era.

On the pins, sophomore Ines Lodasa put together a strong line against Baylor, matching her career high with five aces while adding nine digs and three blocks. Colorado’s attack also got another lift from Ana Burilovic, who ranks 24th nationally in kills per set at 4.21. The Buffaloes are 9-0 this season when they win the opening set.

Arizona State brings plenty of firepower of its own. The Sun Devils are paced by a trio of upperclass hitters: senior Noemie Glover leads the way with 3.77 kills per set, junior Una Vajagic follows at 3.73, and graduate Aniya Clinton adds 2.63. All three finished with double-digit kills in their last match against Iowa State.

Statistically, Arizona State has been tough to deal with across the board. The Sun Devils are second in the Big 12 in opponent digs, assists, kills, blocks and hitting percentage. They’re hitting .225 as a team and averaging 2.48 blocks per set.

JJ Van Niel is in his third season as Arizona State’s head coach, and he has already guided the Sun Devils to back-to-back Big 12 championships in 2024 and 2025.

Colorado Faces A Huge In-State Recruiting Test At Quarterback

The recruiting spotlight was already bright around Colorados quarterback room, and Titus Huard only added to it during the Buffaloes game against Texas Tech. The four-star passer, who is Colorados top 2027 recruit, was on hand for the visit and had a chance to spend time with the coaching staff, giving the program a key look at a prospect who could shape its long-term plans.

Huards ties to the Buffaloes run through his high school coach, Mike Sanford Jr., and that connection has helped keep Colorado firmly in the mix. He came away optimistic about what he saw, even as he continues to sort through other possibilities with planned visits to Oregon and UCLA still ahead in the process. [Read more 🡒]

Deion Sanders Faces A Brutal Colorado Question After 3 Straight Losses

Colorados fast start has given way to a rough midseason stretch, and the buzz around Deion Sanders has shifted with it. After opening the 2026 season with two wins, the Buffaloes have dropped three straight to fall to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play, a slide that has revived familiar questions about where the program is headed and how quickly it can steady itself.

The criticism is only getting louder as the bye week arrives, with Fox Sports personality Colin Cowherd among those taking aim at Sanders ability to sustain success at the sports highest level. For Colorado, the timing adds to the pressure, because the next test is No. 12 Utah and the issues are bigger than one bad stretch - quarterback stability, overall execution and the broader sense of organization all remain in the spotlight. Colorados Offense Just Raised A Bigger Concern For Deion Sanders

Colorados latest loss turned into more than a bad afternoon on the scoreboard, because the offense never recovered after the opening drive and the turnover margin kept handing Texas Tech extra chances. The Red Raiders defense picked off four passes, turning those mistakes into 20 points, and the result was a road win built as much on discipline and adjustments as on explosiveness.

For Deion Sanders, the concern is no longer just the final number but how little Colorado was able to generate once Texas Tech settled in. Joey McGuires side credited preparation and midgame defensive tweaks for the performance, with John Curry and Brice Pollock pointing to the work behind it, while Colorado was left searching for answers after its offense went quiet for the rest of the night.
