Colorado Faces Early Big 12 Pressure In Crucial Kansas State Trip

Can the Colorado Buffaloes capitalize on Kansas State's struggles to secure an important win in their Big 12 showdown?

The Colorado Buffaloes are heading into Friday’s match at Kansas State with something simple on the agenda: turn a close loss into a response.

Colorado opens a three-game road stretch at Buser Family Park in Manhattan, Kan., with kickoff set for 5:30 p.m. MT and the match streaming on ESPN+.

The Buffs come in at 9-4-1 overall and 3-3-0 in Big 12 play after a 1-0 loss to Kansas on Sunday, a game decided by a late goal. Kansas State arrives at 5-5-4 and 0-5-1 in the conference after falling 3-2 at then-No.

7 Baylor.

With five league matches left, head coach Danny Sanchez sees Friday as a chance for Colorado to settle back in and push toward the finish line of Big 12 play.

"I thought we played really well in stretches, especially in the second half," Sanchez said of the Kansas match. "So we need to build off of that and play well to get a result on the road."

That road result matters for a Buffaloes team trying to keep its conference position moving in the right direction. Sanchez also pointed to the value of an early breakthrough against the Wildcats, saying, "I just think it's as simple as goals change games," Sanchez said. "The longer the game goes where we're struggling to find that goal, the more difficult we're going to make it on ourselves."

Kansas State hasn’t found its first conference win yet, but the Wildcats were competitive against Baylor. They led twice before the Bears scored the final two goals.

Forward Adelle Francis and fellow forward Alix Regier were involved in both Kansas State scores, with Francis striking twice to reach a career-high three goals this season, all in Big 12 play. Regier picked up the first two assists of her career.

Junior midfielder Gabby DeMers leads K-State with five goals and 12 points, and she also tops the team in shots with 39 and shots on goal with 18. Rilyn Rintoul has added three goals and three assists, while freshman defender Lauren Moylan has chipped in two goals and two assists. In goal, Maddie Sibbing has been steady, starting 32 straight matches and posting 48 saves, a 1.37 goals-against average and three solo shutouts.

Colorado has its own attack to lean on. Reagan Kotschau leads the Buffs with 22 points on seven goals and eight assists, both assist and point totals already career bests.

Hope Leyba has been just as central, pacing CU with nine goals and sitting one away from tying Nikki Marshall for second in program history. Her two-goal showing against Baylor moved her into third all-time with 41 career goals, one behind Marshall’s 42.

Michaela McGowan adds another scoring threat with five goals and 11 points, and Jace Holley gave the Buffs a lift in one of her five appearances this season, finishing with a goal and an assist against Baylor after returning to the rotation.

Colorado’s defense has been just as important as its scoring. The Buffs have already posted eight shutouts through 14 matches, with Faith Leyba and Emma Thielbahr starting every game. Freshman goalkeeper Brooke Goerish owns a 0.72 goals-against average and a .852 save percentage with 46 saves, along with five solo shutouts and three shared clean sheets.

Colorado holds a 1-0-1 edge in the all-time series. The teams played to a scoreless draw at Prentup Field on Sept. 18, 2025, after the Buffs won 1-0 in Manhattan in the first meeting in 2024.

Buffs Let A Stronger Start Slip Away At Stanford

Colorado had some early positives at the Stanford Intercollegiate before the opening round settled into a tougher afternoon, leaving the Buffaloes in 14th place after a 15-over-par start. Senior Maya McVey provided the best round for Colorado, carding a 1-over 72 to pace the lineup while the team tried to keep contact with a deep field playing on a demanding course.

Stanford set the tone at the top of the leaderboard, opening at 13-under-par and creating an early gap the Buffaloes will need to chase down. For Colorado, the task now is less about salvaging one round than finding the steadier stretch that can turn a rough opening into a climb over the next 36 holes. [Read more 🡒]

Buffs Are One Win From A Breakthrough With NCAA Stakes

Colorados women were still alive in the ITA Mountain Regional Championships thanks to a strong run from Lera Alexin and Ema Bubalo, who moved through the quarterfinals and into the doubles final with a chance to keep the Buffs postseason hopes climbing. The pairs success came as Heidi Crncans singles run ended in the round of 16 against Utahs Sara Akid, leaving Colorado with its clearest path in doubles.

Alexin and Bubalo now sit one win away from a regional championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Individual Championships, a prize that would put a real exclamation point on the Buffs weekend. Their next opponent will come from the other side of the bracket, and the matchup only adds to the stakes for a Colorado duo that has already given the program a meaningful lift at the right time. Colorado Heads Into Utah With Key Availability Questions Still Looming

Colorados Week 7 injury report brought a mix of relief and concern as the Buffaloes prepared for Utah, with several names shifting in and out of availability ahead of the trip. Edge rusher Immanuel Ezeogu has been cleared to play, while Lester remains questionable and multiple starters are still dealing with injuries that could affect both sides of the ball.

The bigger changes came with the status of Martinez, who was removed from the injury report, and Perry, who is out for the Utah game. For a Colorado team trying to manage its depth on the fly, those updates only add to the uncertainty surrounding how much of the rotation will actually be available when the Buffaloes take the field.
