Colorado Defense Showed Real Progress Before One More Painful Breakdown

Deck: Sanata Hopper's career-high performance anchors Colorado's defense in a hard-fought battle against high-scoring Texas Tech, showcasing a significant evolution despite the eventual scoreline.

Sanata Hopper gave Colorado exactly the kind of defensive jolt the Buffaloes needed against No. 12 Texas Tech.

The Buffs spent most of Saturday making life difficult for a Red Raiders offense that came in averaging 36.2 points per game, holding Texas Tech to 12 points through the first three quarters and staying within reach until the final period. Colorado’s defense ultimately gave way late in a 29-7 loss, but the performance was a clear step forward from the team’s previous games against Northwestern and Baylor.

Hopper was the centerpiece. The defensive lineman piled up 10 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and five quarterback hurries, all career highs.

That production put him in rare company: he became the first player in CU history to record at least five tackles for loss and quarterback hurries in the same game. According to PFF, he was also the first defensive lineman in the last seven seasons of FBS football dating back to 2020 - a span of almost 10,000 games - to post those numbers.

“It’s like a chain reaction,” Hopper said about the defense's mentality. “You see one person doing something good, you want to do something good, so it makes me feel good to go out there and make a play.”

Colorado’s pass defense was especially sharp. Texas Tech managed just 134 passing yards, its lowest total of the season, while the Buffaloes limited the Red Raiders to 12 total tackles for loss on defense, with Hopper involved in half of them.

The Buffaloes also kept Texas Tech out of the end zone for the first 30 minutes and carried a 12-7 game into the end of the third quarter. The Red Raiders finally created separation in the fourth quarter with two late touchdowns.

“I liked many aspects of [the defense]," Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders said. “We still broke at the end. And a good defense, a great defense, doesn't break.”

Now Colorado heads into its bye week with Hopper focused on getting healthier and moving on quickly.

“My mentality is to flush this loss,” he said. “I did have a decent game today, but I just want to flush it, you know.

It doesn't matter when you lose. So, I want to flush this.

I want to get this out of the way. We've got people banged up.

We want people to get back and be a little more healthy, and just get ready for Utah.”

Cherry Creek Faces A Real Test As Its Surge Meets A 5-1 Threat

Cherry Creeks unbeaten reputation will get a real measuring stick this week when the No. 1 team in Colorado high school football lines up against Northfield, with both schools carrying 5-1 records into the matchup. The Bruins have looked the part of a state power, and their recent uptick has been helped by the return of junior quarterback Bentley Unruh, whose presence made a noticeable difference in their last game.

Northfield, though, brings more than just a winning record to the table. Senior tailback Kaeden Williams has been the centerpiece of a physical offense, piling up 822 yards and seven touchdowns on the season, which gives the Raiders a proven way to challenge Cherry Creeks defense. For a team trying to protect its top ranking, this is the kind of game that can reveal a lot in a hurry, even before the broader state playoff picture comes into focus. [Read more 🡒]

BYU Just Took A Big Hit Before A Crucial Stretch

BYUs offense is heading into a rough stretch without one of its most important pieces. Running back LJ Martin went down with a lower-body injury against TCU, and the Cougars are bracing for a significant stretch without their lead runner as they prepare for a matchup with Notre Dame and other games beyond that.

The loss puts more pressure on an already shifting offensive plan, with quarterback Bear Bachmeier likely to shoulder a bigger load while the rushing attack waits for Martin to return. For a team trying to navigate a pivotal run of games, the absence of a back who has been central to the ground game changes the feel of everything around it. [Read more 🡒]

Colorado Bye Week Could Decide Whether This Slide Gets Any Worse

Colorados three-game skid has been shaped as much by the injury report as by the scoreboard, with the Buffaloes trying to keep a season from drifting while key pieces have been in and out of the lineup. Sack leader Nate Lester has been missed on the edge, and the passing game has also felt the strain with DeAndre Moore Jr. and Scudero either sidelined or limited at different points, leaving the offense short of its usual options as the losses piled up.

The bye week now offers a chance to reset before the next stretch of games, and the staff will spend it trying to get healthier in spots that have been thin for weeks. Colorado also has to sort through the defensive depth chart, where freshman Preston Ashley had started to carve out a role at nickel before missing Week 5, another reminder of how quickly the roster has been stretched.
