Cherry Creek Faces A Ranking Test Fans Can't Ignore

In a clash of titans, top-ranked Cherry Creek looks to defend their spotless league record against the formidable Eaglecrest, as both teams vie for supremacy in Colorado high school football.

Cherry Creek walks into Centennial on Friday night as the state’s No. 1 team, but Eaglecrest has plenty going for it too.

The matchup brings together two 6-1 teams, with Cherry Creek sitting at the top of the latest High School On SI Colorado Top 25 poll and Eaglecrest checking in at No. 19.

The Bruins also lead the 5A Centennial League at 3-0, while the Raptors are 2-1 in league play. Cherry Creek’s lone blemish officially remains its season-opening forfeit win against Chatfield; since then, the Bruins have won six straight on the field.

That stretch hasn’t come against soft competition, either. Cherry Creek has already worked through a demanding schedule and knocked off Legend, Valor Christian and Northfield along the way.

On the other side, Eaglecrest’s only loss came against Grandview, and the Raptors are coming off a strong defensive effort in a 28-0 shutout of Pine Creek.

Cherry Creek’s offense has been rolling, with 223 points scored and only 99 allowed. Quarterback Bentley Unruh is back after a recent injury and has topped 1,040 passing yards with 11 touchdowns. Junior running back Elijah Cromwell has added nearly 550 rushing yards and eight scores, including two touchdowns last week against Northfield.

Eaglecrest’s defense has been just as sturdy, surrendering only 74 points all season. Offensively, quarterback Will Brinkman has thrown for 1,174 yards and nine touchdowns, while tailback Clyde Surrell has piled up 840 yards on 131 carries with six scores.

Live updates from Centennial are being handled by High School On SI correspondent Buck Ringgold, with the game being played at Eaglecrest High School. Broncos radio voice and Cherry Creek coach Dave Logan also came into the night fresh off calling Denver’s 17-14 overtime win over Seattle on Thursday.

Colorados Top 2026 Linebacker Suddenly Feels Far From Secure

Carson Crawford arrived in Boulder as one of Colorados more promising linebacker additions in the 2026 class, but his freshman-season foothold has been slower to develop than expected. The four-star recruit has appeared in only two games and has recorded five total tackles, a modest start for a player who came in with some real long-term buzz at the position.

What makes the situation more notable is that the path to snaps has not exactly been blocked by a fully settled depth chart. Even with injuries creating openings elsewhere, Colorado has leaned on other linebackers for those depth roles, leaving Crawford on the outside looking in more often than not. That has naturally led to speculation about whether hell stick it out, though Chris Marves presence as his position coach still gives the Buffaloes at least one important reason to believe the relationship can keep him in the program. Colorado Heads Into Utah With Key Availability Questions Still Looming

Colorados Week 7 injury report brought a mix of relief and concern as the Buffaloes prepare for Utah, with edge rusher Immanuel Ezeogu cleared to play and several other names still hovering on the doubtful side of the ledger. Lester remains questionable, and the list of unavailable starters continues to shape both sides of the ball, leaving the staff to juggle rotations as the matchup approaches.

Martinez also came off the report after surgery, a sign his recovery is expected to take time rather than days, while Perry has already been ruled out for the Utah game. For a Colorado team trying to steady itself in conference play, the health picture matters as much as the opponent, and the final availability decisions could end up telling as much about this week as anything that happens on the field. Colorados Upset Bid Vs Utah May Hinge On One Injury Concern

Coming out of a bye week, Colorado heads into a tough home matchup with No. 11 Utah carrying more questions than it would like on the injury front. The Buffaloes have several players listed as questionable or inactive, and the uncertainty comes at a bad time against a Utes team that appears to be in better shape physically, with a few key pieces returning from injury.

For Colorado, the biggest concern is along the defensive front, where Lamont Lester Jr. remains the name to watch as kickoff approaches. The Buffaloes are also expected to be without linebacker Tyler Martinez and offensive lineman Demetrius Hunter, leaving the staff with more lineup juggling to do as it tries to find enough stability against one of the Pac-12's toughest opponents.
