The Colorado Buffaloes opened the San Diego State Invitational with a clean sweep in doubles and added two singles wins Friday at the Aztec Tennis Complex, putting together a strong start to the three-day event in San Diego.
Colorado’s doubles teams set the tone immediately. Lera Alexin and Ema Bubalo, back on court together after earning an NCAA Individual Championships bid at ITA Mountain Regionals in October, beat Denver’s Sofia Mavor and Paulina Jurkowska 6-3.
On the next court, Heidi Crncan and Willow Gretsch handled Colorado State’s Diana Lizarazo and Leyla Tozin by the same score, 6-3. Pia Rebec and Louise Ternstroem finished the sweep with a 6-4 win over San Diego’s Lila Grace Bachour and Anna Linn Moll.
“I thought we did a nice job in doubles today,” CU Head Coach Anthony Pham said. “Our response mechanism was outstanding and we played with great enthusiasm overall.”
The Buffs carried that momentum into singles, where Bubalo and Crncan both came through in straight sets. Bubalo beat UC San Diego’s Sonya Goldberg 6-3, 6-2, while Crncan was even sharper against UCSD freshman Kannchaya Chugwantan, rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Alexin also pushed her match to a deciding third set before falling to UCSD’s Cassie Blakey 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Rebec, making her first competitive singles appearance of the season, dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Stanford’s Caroline Driscoll. Ternstroem’s match against Denver’s Paulina Jurkowska ended with Jurkowska leading 6-5 before Ternstroem retired.
Colorado’s day began with the doubles pairings and a familiar feel. Alexin and Bubalo, who had already beaten Denver opponents earlier this fall at Regionals and the Colorado Cup, made it three straight over the Pioneers after taking control early and closing out the set. Crncan and Gretsch also got the better of a familiar foe in Colorado State, and Rebec and Ternstroem finished the job against the Tritons in a tighter matchup to complete the sweep.
In singles, Bubalo kept the Buffs moving after the morning success, taking the first set against Goldberg and finishing the match with another steady second set. Crncan was dominant from the start, not giving Chugwantana a foothold in the opening set and allowing just one game in the second.
Colorado returns to action Saturday, with doubles set to start at 9 a.m. local time and singles to follow at 9:45 a.m. Pham said, “Our group continues to compete very hard across the board,” and added, “Tommorow is another opportunity for us to get better!”

Colorado Recruiting Just Took Another Hit At A Crucial Time
Colorados 2027 recruiting class has taken another small but noticeable hit, with the Buffaloes now dealing with two decommitments as the staff keeps pushing to build out the next wave of talent. Even with the recent turnover, the class still includes 19 verbal commits and remains positioned near the top of the Big 12, a reminder that the overall foundation is still intact even as the process gets more complicated.
The latest movement only adds to the pressure on Colorados recruiting operation, especially at wide receiver, where the staff has made clear it wants to keep adding pieces. Rankings from On3, Rivals and 247Sports still place the Buffaloes in the national conversation, but the challenge now is holding the class together while continuing to target the spots that matter most. Colorado Heads To Arizona State With A Road Problem Getting Worse
Colorado heads to Tempe on Saturday with the kind of road burden that keeps following a team from one week to the next. At 3-5 overall and 1-4 in Big 12 play, the Buffaloes are trying to steady themselves against Arizona State at Mountain America Stadium, where the Sun Devils sit at 4-4 and have their own issues to sort through.
The bigger concern for Colorado is how often promising starts have slipped away in league play. The Buffs have been in front in every Big 12 game this season, yet the results have not matched the early momentum, and the road slide has only made the margin for error thinner. Both teams have had turnover problems, so Colorados best path may be the simplest one: run the ball well, protect it, and avoid giving Arizona State extra chances. [Read more 🡒]
Colorado Gets An Early Test That Will Mean More Than Usual
Colorados early-season schedule is about to get a little more meaningful, with San Diego State coming to town on Nov. 7 in a matchup that carries more weight than a typical nonconference game. The Buffs are coming off a season-opening win over Abilene Christian, where Jalin Holland and Josiah Sanders were among the players who stood out, and now they get a chance to build on that start against an opponent that already has a win of its own after beating Cal State Fullerton.
San Diego States arrival also gives Colorado a first look at a familiar league landscape from a new angle, since the Aztecs are in their first season in the refreshed Pac-12. For the Buffs, it adds a layer of relevance to a game that already had some intrigue, with both programs entering with momentum and a little extra incentive to make an early statement. [Read more 🡒]
