Buffs Suffer A Brutal Big 12 Loss With More At Stake Now

Kansas snaps Colorado's long-standing home streak with a last-minute goal, stirring up the Big 12 standings.

BOULDER - Kansas slipped past the Colorado Buffaloes soccer team 1-0 Sunday at Prentup Field, landing the only goal of the afternoon with six minutes left and handing CU a pair of painful firsts in the process.

The Jayhawks’ late strike ended Colorado’s 14-match win streak, which had been set Thursday against Baylor, and also snapped a 23-game home unbeaten run that dated back to Oct. 13, 2024. The defeat dropped the Buffs to 9-4-1 overall and 3-3-0 in Big 12 play, while Kansas improved to 10-3-1 and 4-1-1.

“It was always going to be a tight game like this, and we knew it,” Head Coach Danny Sanchez said. “Kansas plays a style that it's tough to find a rhythm in, and credit to them, they found the goal.”

Colorado had chances, but Kansas made life miserable for the Buffs all day, especially for forward Hope Leyba. The Jayhawks crowded CU’s attackers, clogged passing lanes and forced Colorado into a game that never really opened up.

“They double team every time you get the ball, and they just kick it down the field, so it makes it hard to play,” Leyba said. “I thought it was a hard game. They're good, and we just didn't finish our chances when we needed to.”

The match was chippy from start to finish, with the teams combining for 17 fouls. Colorado finished with a 13-12 edge in shots and also led 4-3 in corner kicks, but Kansas matched CU with three shots on goal and got the one that mattered from midfielder Marit McLaughlin in the 84th minute.

Kansas controlled the early feel of the game, holding possession and putting three shots together in the opening 20 minutes. Colorado’s first shot on goal didn’t come until the 23rd minute, when a Leyba header floated just over the crossbar.

The Buffs had a few more looks before halftime. In the 32nd minute, Kotschau sent a blast from outside the box over the bar.

Two minutes later, Leyba tried from a similar spot and missed just wide right. Colorado’s best opportunity came in the 42nd minute, when midfielder Reagan Kotschau served a corner kick to Faith Leyba, who headed it to Hope Leyba.

Her attempt hit the top left corner of the crossbar.

The teams went into halftime deadlocked, each with five shots and neither side recording a shot on goal. Kansas still held a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

The second half stayed locked in the same grind. Colorado couldn’t turn a corner kick into a breakthrough, and Kansas finally forced goalkeeper Brooke Goerish into her first save of the day in the 72nd minute.

Then came the moment that decided it. With CU defenders around the box, forward Jordan Rowan found McLaughlin near the top of the area, and McLaughlin fired to the top center of the net for the 1-0 lead and the win.

Colorado now turns to a three-game road stretch, starting Friday, Oct. 16, in Manhattan, Kan., against Kansas State. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.

Colorado Still Needs Two Hyped Transfers To Rescue This Offense

Several of Colorados new transfers have already made their presence felt on defense, with Santana Hopper, Toby Anene and Gideon Lampron giving Deion Sanders useful early contributions on that side of the ball. The offense, though, is still waiting for a couple of headline additions to catch up to the hype, and the Buffaloes have been left trying to piece together more consistency around the players who were supposed to deepen the skill positions.

Danny Scudero has been slowed early and has not yet given Colorado the explosive receiver boost it hoped for, while Richard Youngs workload has been limited enough to keep the Buffaloes searching for another dependable option behind the top of the offense. For a team still trying to settle into the season, getting more out of those transfers would go a long way toward changing the feel of the unit as the schedule moves on. [Read more 🡒]

Colorados Biggest Bye Week Decision Could Define The Rest Of 2026

The bye week gave Colorado a chance to step back and assess where things have gone after a three-game losing streak, and the biggest question in Boulder is sitting right at the center of the offense. The Buffaloes are weighing their starting quarterback situation as they turn toward a Week 7 meeting with Utah, with Julian Lewis, Isaac Wilson and Kaneal Sweetwyne all part of the conversation.

Deion Sanders has already made clear that this isnt just about one game, but about what kind of direction the program wants to take from here. Lewis still has a path to reclaiming the job if he sharpens his play, while the choice between Wilson and Sweetwyne could say a lot about whether Colorado is aiming for a short-term fix or something more ambitious for the stretch run. No. 23 Colorado Just Delivered The Big 12 Spark Fans Needed

No. 23 Colorado volleyball got the kind of jolt its Big 12 season needed at the CU Events Center, finding a way to outlast Kansas State in a five-set match that tested the Buffaloes from the start. The win gave Colorado a little more breathing room in conference play and pushed its season record to 11-4, a welcome response after a stretch in which every league result has carried extra weight.

Cayla Payne provided a milestone night in the middle with 400 career blocks, while Ines Losada delivered a serving burst that matched her career and season high with five aces. Kansas State made Colorado work for it and left Boulder with a 9-5 overall mark and a 2-4 Big 12 record, but the bigger takeaway for the Buffaloes was the resilience they showed when the match could have slipped away early.
