Colorado Buffaloes Spring Camp: Building Momentum with Versatility and Youth
The Colorado Buffaloes wrapped up the third week of their spring camp with an energetic scrimmage at the Ford Practice Facility. The team showcased growing momentum on both sides of the ball, highlighting a defense that's adapting well under new defensive coordinator Chris Marve.
The defensive unit is showing increased versatility and communication, especially in the secondary. Assistant defensive backs coach Kevin Mathis emphasized the importance of adaptability in their coverages, allowing players to display diverse skill sets. "It's about running to the ball, being aggressive, and making plays," Mathis explained.
A key component of this defense is the nickel position, which demands intelligence and toughness. "That guy has to be a great athlete," Mathis noted. "He’s got to know football and be tough, sometimes playing like a linebacker, sometimes in space."
The collaborative coaching approach is paying dividends, with multiple voices aiding player development. "Our staff's knowledge and experience allow us to focus on the details," Mathis said.
On the field, the depth chart is being shaped by both seasoned players and newcomers. Boo Carter has stood out with his evident talent, while freshman Preston Ashley is making waves with his energy and quick learning.
"Boo is one of the most talented guys I've coached," Mathis praised. "It's about consistency and bringing it every play."
Under head coach Deion Sanders, there's a trend of trusting young players who prove themselves. Freshman Preston Ashley has found the transition to Boulder smooth and fulfilling.
"When I stepped foot in Colorado, it felt like home," Ashley shared. "Everything is moving fast, but I'm learning and getting better every day."
Ashley’s aggressive and physical style fits perfectly with Colorado's defensive system. "That's how I've always played," he said, appreciating the influence of veteran leaders and daily competition. "Guys like Yo yo (Yahya Attia) and the older players have been guiding me since I arrived."
With opportunities for early playing time, Ashley is motivated. "I pride myself on being the first one here and the last to leave, always improving," he said.
As spring camp progresses, Colorado is focused on development, accountability, and competition, all building toward the annual Black and Gold spring game and setting the stage for the 2026 season.
