BOULDER - No. 19 Colorado put on a full display Friday night at Prentup Field, rolling past Denver 6-0 behind Hope Leyba’s third career hat trick and a dominant all-around performance that pushed the Buffaloes to 6-1-1 on the 2026 season.
Leyba finished with three goals and now has 83 career points, which moves her into fifth place in program history. Colorado also got goals from Michaela McGowan, Berkley Mensik and Hannah Healy as it wrapped up non-conference play in front of 1,855 fans.
“I thought we played fantastic,” said head coach Danny Sanchez. “I want to give a shout-out to the crowd.
This should be the standard. Even with other things going on, with football tomorrow, what a fantastic crowd and what a way to honor our alums that came back and our four Wall of Honor (recipients).”
Sanchez also praised Leyba’s finishing touch after the forward kept finding the right spots all night.
“She created tons of opportunities, and finished her opportunities tonight,” Sanchez said.
Leyba said the night was made easier by the group around her.
“I thought it was just fun playing with my teammates,” Leyba said.
Senior captain Reagan Kotschau played a big role in the win, assisting on two of Leyba’s three goals. She said the connection between the two has become second nature.
“I know exactly what she's going to do every time,” Kotschau said. “I feel like I don't even have to look at her to play her the ball.
She's super awesome, easy to get the ball to. I love playing with her.”
Colorado wasted little time taking control. McGowan scored in the ninth minute against one of her former teams, burying a low shot into the bottom left corner off a pass from Ruby Hayward.
The lead doubled in the 33rd minute when Leyba took a ball from Kotschau at the top of the box and blasted a right-footed shot into the top of the net.
Then, just before halftime, Mensik added another. She finished off assists from Jordan Whiteaker and Sienna McAthy to make it 3-0 at the break.
The numbers told the story by then. Colorado had 13 shots, nine on goal, and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks while Denver finished the first half without a shot.
The second half brought more of the same. In the 53rd minute, Kotschau carried the ball from midfield into the box and set up Leyba for her second goal of the evening.
Six minutes later, Leyba completed the hat trick. Whiteaker connected with McGowan, who slipped the ball to Colorado’s leading scorer for the finish.
Colorado’s final goal came in the 74th minute after Kaia Santomarco-King was fouled in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Healy converted from the spot, sending the ball into the bottom-right corner.
At halftime, Nikki Marshall, Laura Munnelly, Fran Munnelly and Taylor Kornieck were honored as the inaugural members of the Colorado Soccer Wall of Honor. The four former Buffaloes are the first class, with more honorees to come in future years. The Wall of Honor will be installed at Prentup Field at a later date.
Colorado now heads to Ames, Iowa, where it will open Big 12 play against Iowa State on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
